You really caught a sense of motion in it. I would have composed it so he was on the left of frame going to the right but heck thats my hang up.
What tele is that J ?
Morning shot i assume from the sun behind ?

The exposure to the left of the frame is better than to the right. If the
surfer were more to the left and maybe OE a stop to better expose?
Action is always good too. Like coming off the top of the wave or the cut
back down.

Jeff..
Not to be too brutally frank, but the image is a bit linear/flat. It doesn't speak waves/surfing.
Not that I am any expert, but the trick with surf shots is to imagine that you have to tell people that do not know surfing, or those that do (your potential market) that the wave they caught made them look like Kelly Slater..
The image you posted simply doesn't scream anything, even with low surf.
Try to catch surfers at the peak of a wave or a "trick".
Here's one I shot from last week, nothing too special but one I could find quickly to illustrate "peakness"...

Are you local? I'm in Santa Cruz.

Jeff,
I agree with Andrew. It's a nicely exposed shot, but the subject isn't doing anything that's very interesting. Yes, you can see the foam trail and yes you can imagine he's moving up the wave. But, if you watch much surfing, that's pretty tame stuff. I agree with Andrew about trying to catch the surfer(s) doing a trick, or better yet getting some air :clap I believe these type shots are more interesting for surfers and non-surfers to view. Personally, I like to see the surfer somewhat parallel to the ocean's surface (like Andrew's example). You know, sort of defying gravity? Or, doing something like dipping their head into the curl as the wave is breaking. Or a nice roostertail :D

I'm no pro either, but I used to surf alot, and I have viewed thousands of magazine surf shots. Mine aren't even close to mag quality, but I keep trying. Take lots of shots in the continuous mode and chances are you will capture some kewl action, or wipeout shots.
Thanks for sharing and keep shooting those surf shots :clap

...what i need is better surfers :rofl Sometimes that's half the battle. I've spent more than my fair share of
time waiting for a decent shot to come along.

And sometimes you get lucky (which I think I've had more than my fair
share of at surf shots).
