View Full Version : Assignment #33: Series
Nikolai
Apr-27-2007, 10:29 AM
For what it's worth, our worst pp nightmares (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=59404) are over...
Let's switch from the lowly digital darkroom back to the pure photography, shall we? ;-)
This week subject is Series.
Your unedited shot should contain several (preferably more than 3) objects of the same/similar shape/color/texture/whatever that would allow an uneducated viewer to easily associate them together. As a rule (which could be be creatively broken :wink) those objects should also line up in some sort of a simple pattern (line, grid, etc.)
As usual: fresh pictures, moderate post-processing.
For the rest of the basic rules and index please check out this sticky (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=41800).
Let's get some series! :-) :wink

Thanks! I like #2 the most, although #1 is fine, too. :thumb
#3 - not so much. Usually "series" are associated with more uniform-looking subjects and simpler layout patterns... :dunno

Not the best light for shooting (my kitchen at 11PM with a CF bulb), but I didn't think it was too bad.

The first are key bushing cauls used for re-bushing piano keys, made of brass (so they can be heated to a better compression set for glue/felt).
The third are upright piano bi-chord damper felts. These are cut apart and glued on the damper blocks. The wedges fit in between two bass strings (hence, bi-chord) to mute them when the key is released.

I knew it... We used to have grand piano at home when I was a kid (both my mom and my older sister played), so it had that feeling... I just didn't realize at the the time you brought the piccies...:thumb

Every One's a Winner:
http://airglowimaging.smugmug.com/photos/148669945-L.jpg
1920's game of chance - put a coin in the slot and flick a steel ball round the loops. Depending on speed, gravity, and luck the ball might end up in a cup. If it does, you get your money back and a free shot. If it doesn't, you just have another go with another coin...

I have to admit I agree with Pyro: there is not enough uniformity for it to be a valid "series" :dunno

My first reaction is it would be so much better shot if taken from the opposite direction, with light hitting the "heads" and a darker, less distracting, BG.

Slightly different angle and higher DOF. The light trail you can just see is from the steel ball.

It's one of the most famous streets in Poland - Dluga Street (Long Street)
in Gdansk. The picture was taken on a very foggy day a couple of months
ago. I was lucky to get the quirky pose by the person in the middle.

You know about the "fresh" rule, don't you? :wink You need to be aware of the WA when taking a shot. Archive shots can only be used for illustration/clarification purposes. :deal

Thanks for the feedback! Virtually all my stuff to date is straight out of the camera. I'm only now starting to appreciate post-processing (thank you :bow Dgrin!).
I'll also try posting a larger size next time. Is there a preferred size for posts?

L-image from SM is always a good choice. Otherwise something that would fir in 800x800 box is considered normal. Parnoramas are exception, naturally...
