a little beach runner working at not blowing out the hi lites the nikon book said it was easy whats the caon , cannon canin the other camera book say ? nikon lied it ain't easy

I like both images. The first is close up and intimate. The second has nice composition and shallow DOF with the bird nice and crisp. A small nit might be that I would have composed the second image with the bird in the right upper third rather than the left so it is looking into the frame rather than out of the frame, but I still like the image a lot.
Your exposure seems fine to me. Avoiding blowing out the highlights is a little easier if you shoot RAW (NEF for Nikonians:1drink) rather than jpgs. Allows you a little more wiggle room where you want your highlights to be ( eg what the RGB numbers are after processing)
Small bird shooting can be an interesting and fun challenge :thumb

Outstanding Jeff. :clap These are the best pics I've seen from you so far. You handled a very difficult subject well.
I agree with PF's comments on the comp of the second run.
