This is a shot I took on a recent trip to Venice, showing how some of the city is in a poor state. What do you think?

Where in Hertfordshire are you?

Hi Stan
A speedy reply!
The file didn't load the first time, but it should be there now. I'm in Berkhamsted, near Hemel Hempstead.

Has anyone any views (no pun intended!)?

You did a good job with the composition but it needs a Gondola or something.

That's a thought! I do have plenty of other pictures with a gondola in but, perversely, no this one. Perhaps I could PS something in the water - any ideas?

Good: The reflections in the water are nice. Technically seems ok.
Bad: It doesn't seem super interesting to me. There doesn't really seem to be a subject -- it's just a wall. I agree with the previous poster that a gondola or something would help. Then again, maybe I'm biased because I see a lot of crumbling masonry. Comes from living downtown and walking down a lot of alleys.
Disclaimer: I'm pretty new at this, so maybe I'm off base here. But it's what I think.

Fair comment, Beaker - but I bet the crumbling walls near you don't have canals passing by!:wink

Only when it rains really hard, and then I usually end up with a canal in my basement as well. :dunno

I think it would be more interesting if you had shot later in the day (or earlier in the morning?) as the lighting is pretty harsh and doesn't add any ambience to the scene. The scene in itself is not too interesting and there isn't much to zero in on. My eyes wander around looking but never really finding anything of interest, and yet I do love old, decaying buildings, shutter and window-boxes with flowers! At least you managed to capture some very blue sky!

:agree What Susan said about lighting. And it does need something that gives it place - a gondola or angled differently to include a bridge over the canal, or something. As is, could be almost anywhere during a nasty flood. But I too like old buildings.

Yeah, the lighting was going to be my commnet, as well. The compisition's fine, and it's an interesting subject. But it's like a threee legged stool: without interesting light, the thing won't stand. Don't ask me how many times I've been there, done that. They won't eve give me a t-shirt for it anymore.

YBut it's like a threee legged stool: without interesting light, the thing won't stand.
:scratch If the legs on the stool are in a triangle, it'll stand just fine (aren't milking stools often three-legged?)
But yeah, the point is the light. Looks a little like a snap to me-- not much more. A good trick when travelling is to check out the postcards on display at tourist spots. You can get ideas on locations and I'll be willing to bet someone else has shot 'crumbling venice' and turned it into a postcard. I'm not saying copy their photos-- just get some inspiration for what looks cool.

Adding the Gondola in the post-process is something that would require some major time in photoshop ....it will also change the focus of the image to the gondola.
If you want to draw attention to the "crumble" you might want to think about alternative ways to draw the viewer to that conclusion. Selective coloring or possibly some sepia-type treatment to make it look aged. I am not a fan of image borders but this might also be an idea for you.

Hey! Looks like Venice!! Might want to pump up colors and contrast, and perhaps crop out the shadowed water on the right (just a quick opinion), but that's Venice alright :thumb
