When I looked at the first pic, I really liked that backlighting in the background. I thought, obviously as you did also, that this part of the shot was most interesting and that the image would benefit from some cropping to bring this out.
I looked at your edit and lo and behold, there's the image I had in my mind :thumb
I'm not sure how much of a positive that is, but FWIW I do like the edit much better :clap

I like this shot, and I think your on the right track with the new crop. Have you tried converting to an extreme B&W, or maybe even duo tone?
I did a quick B&W to see how it would look, just trying to brainstorm. Not sure if this is any better or not. I've always felt a B&W or sepia would help make a scary image seem scarier.
