I visited Yosemite last year and have finally got round to processing this image of Half Dome. Please let me know what you think. I'd be particularly interested in what you think of the B&W conversion as this is my first serious attempt.

The high, heavily overcast light really flattens what should be a very deep field. You could increase the contrast, especially in the clouds, to give it a little more pop and life, especially by bringing up the highlights.

Thanks for the comments, I think you're right that it needs more contrast, however I think you might also be right about the light just not being good enough. I alternate between thinking that I can make this image pretty good and that it's just too flat and boring. Anyway no chance of a re-shoot for now so I'll have to make do with the GIMP.

The clouds were the main reason I took the picture in the first place and thinking about your comments reminded me of this so I have pushed the contrast up quite a lot there, I've also upped the range in the ground. I was a little worried about what I could get away with merging wise as I've effectively applied an ND Grad filter to the original image but it turns out it can mask differences in brightness much better than I thought. I've also cropped a bit off the top and bottom.

Anyway here's an improved (I think) version...

Agreed. Tonal range is much improved.

Hello, can you post the original color photograph? Maybe we can see if we can pull out more contrast with different B&W methods.

Thanks

That would be a good exercise for Finishing School, but not the Whipping Post. This is about critique. :D

Indeed, I wouldn't dream of doing such a thing here :D, however I have done here (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=59479)
