I was reading an article on the NY Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04/15/business/yourmoney/15cameras.html?_r=1&adxnnl=1&oref=slogin&adxnnlx=1176842363-SpWPcDCjyUGO6hxfzYKSBA) about women buying dslrs and taking photos of children. A quote from the article:

"The rise of photography start-ups is helping other businesses as well. BluDomain, a company that designs Web site templates specifically for photographers, introduces about 100 new sites for clients each month. For $800, a new photographer can have her portfolio designed as a flash-driven, fully editable site with proofing galleries and video."

Smugmug does this with a pro a/c for $150 a year. Ok, it's not flash but I hate flash sites. And smugmug handles credit card transactions, prints photos and gives massive customer service.

Perhaps this is a good subject for Don or Andy to blog?

Wow. Kinda patronizing of the Times, isn't it? She's a mom, so you can't take her seriously as a photographer.

I too found this article sexist and condescending. Although they did hit some aspects of the trend on the head, like the improbability of sustaining a photography business "around the edges." I can personally vouch for that.

I'm precisely who they're trying to lump into the stigma, someone who has dSLR, happens to have procreated, and am ramping up my business. Whats upsetting is the oversimplification of what it takes to be a good photographer: get your hubby to buy you a camera, put it in auto at the playgroup, and there's mommys widdle bizness...how cute.
