Assignment #31: 90-60-45

Hi there!

Getting halves (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=58298) was fun, but I think it's time to move on.

This week we're gonna take a slightly different angle at our subjects.
In fact, three different angles.

This week assignment is to take three pictures of the same subject, one right up front (i.e. at 90 degrees), one with it turned 1/3 way off (i.e. at 60 degrees) and last one turned half way off (i.e. at 45 degrees).

You can move yourself relative to the subject (as shown in the example below) or rotate the subject instead (sorry, rotating the fridge was out of my agenda for tonight).

Mind you, your subject shoud take the same spot in your frame, only your angle should change.

Very cool, I'm not a big fan of posterized(sp?) images, so I like the B&W better.

Very minor remarks:

1) It looks like you've got 90-45-0, the last shots in each series are almost profile. Slightly lesser angle variation was asked for. There is a reason for that, trust me:-)

2) Posterization didn't work for me, either :-( :dunno I'd like to see color version, though. :thumb

I didn't keep the colour version. I will try again tomorrow, I actually found it a bit hard on live subject, I practiced frist on fridge but found it quite a bit harder on Rhianna, and she didn't help,either, by contuining to pose at the camera. Thanks for your comments. We'll give it another shot.

OK, I open a little secret. These angles are the ones that can help you to bring the best from the subject, especially in portraits. All people are different, some benefit from the enface view, some require an angle.
This assignment is to produce all three (in fact I should have asked for 5, adding 60 and 45 in other direction), studying them all and making an internal judgement which one benefits the subject the best.

Note that depending on whether you rotate yourself or your subject your light on the subject and your background will be different.

While there is no carved in stone rule about those angles, 45 is about as far you want to rotate the person while still keeping both of his/her eyes visible. And 60 is a nice in-between value :-).

So one 90, two 60s and two 45s give you 5 different portrait angles.

Multiply that by two (rotating yourself vs rotating the subject) or by 3 (add rotating the light), then add Antonio's 3D variations (lower vs normal vs higher) - and I'm sure you'll be able to explain your customers why do you charge $300 per session and why does it take an hour or more just to take ONE good shot...:-)
