I stumbled on this place today on my way back from skiing. Interesting, they plow out a runway and make a temporary winter airport right on the frozen lake. There is quite a community on the ice consisting of fisherman, pilots, snowshoers, snomobilers, ATV riders, motorcycle riders, 4x4's, and more. I just wandered out on the ice and started talking to people. It was pretty cool! I hope you enjoy these shots as much as I did taking them.

Love the look on the face of that dog in the last shot! :D

Are those special tires on the landing gear on the yellow plane (#N3IHY) to make softer landings on the ice?

Yes, big balloon tires for snow. That was the only plane that had those. The other yellow plane had skis, the rest had regular landing gear.

Those dogs were cool. That's about $5-$6K worth of dog right there in those two pups.

Doug,

Thats really interesting. I am surprised they take the risk in landing on the ice. Do you know how thick the ice was? Is this a one day thing or what? Where would these folks normally be flying from if the lake was not frozen?

Nice captures!
