View Full Version : Whip me good....or I'll send the model after you!
Shot with my spare (10D), no extra lighting other than 550EX bounce flash off a FLAT BLACK ceiling (too much chrome, too many mirrors on walls to bounce laterally). Obvious heavy shadow under the chin. :)
Is there something else I could have done lighting wise, and in PP (want to keep the tan shade and tone too)....this was the pose I wanted for this particular shot, so changing that wasn't an option.
Ouch....and thanks!

Have the model you shoot push their chin out a bit when posing. While it looks and feels unnatural, you'll get better results w/ light like this. Head is also tured too sharp for my taste. I'd shoot her at a modified 3/4.
Just because you only have one flash, doesn't mean you need to ceiling or wall bounce. Make a bounce card in 15 seconds w/ paper and a rubber band. So what if it looks a bit unconventional, the resulting shot will make the model happy.
I'd also compose the hands to be cropped at the wrists or include the whole hand. Don't crop fingers.
You can also tell she's posing to maximize body mass. Your the photog, convince her that she'll still look buff if you pose here the way you want.
I have some advise for pp. but that's better off being a sister thread in finishing school so others can gain knowledge as well.

Indeed, her chin should have been thrust out a bit more, also the hair on her right shoulder should have been pushed back, the 3/4 shot would have taken care of that. Good advice, thanks. I have shot perhaps 1000 (yes)
physique models over the last 6 years, and marvel at how the little things that make a difference seem to slide by me from time to time.
This shoot was a surprise to me, not planned I was just visiting the gym to set something up for later in the week....that's why the spare camera and flash. (I have strobes, soft boxes and hot lights I use for my shoots). I bought a diffuser from Joe Demb a week or so after I did these shots, it's just what the doctor ordered for shooting in 75% of the gyms I have to work in.
This is the pose I asked for and got, the model is a professional fitness athlete, and the emphasis in the shoot (around 100 images) was to show off her post competiton conditioning. For a regular "fit" model, you're right, it would be better to "soften" the poses. I do have to be reminded of that as I branch out and shoot with all types of models, thanks for pointing that out.
I'd be interested in some PP advice for sure.

Lighting from above looks too wierd, makes her head look like its glowing (not in a good way).
I would either try to use a wireless flash, or back up a bit, and take an ambient light portrait with my prime lens, if you dont have one, then I guess youre out of luck :P.
