View Full Version : Yosemite Again
This is one from Dec. I posted another one from the same night, but this is from a different angle, and perspective.

To me this photo feels off balance. Too much on the left. More detail in the clouds would help. The trouble with heavily overcast days is that the light is very flat. Also the jpeg looks over-compressed, which doesn't help. Notice the artifacting around the edges of the two big foreground rocks against the water. The greens of the pines across the water look unnaturally muted. The brush at foreground left has lots of detail but the mountains look slightly out of focus, or hazy, or suffering from jpeg artifacting, or a combination of these. I like the snow-covered brown rocks and the reflections in the water. I think that is where the shot is working.

:agree Gary, when you see attached images (as opposed to embedded), you'll need to look past the compression.

Maybe an ND grad filter to darken the sky a bit? Or some post to make it more 'moody'? It's a very nice shot, but doesn't grab me like many landscapes do-- just seems a little haphazard and quickly shot to me. I'm a fan on including more foreground and much crazier light in landscapes when possible. And yes, I realize that sometimes means getting up before dawn or whatever... that's why good landscape photos look so cool. They catch that magic few minutes of light. Not sure if yours does...

I agree with Pete. For me, all the elements are there, except the lighting. And I like active skies as well. Magic hour is magical, for sure. I do like the comp, though, maybe more than others.
