USAIR, andy, harryb:

Thanks. I appreciate your comments.

I have a question, though. I'm having trouble dealing with giving up parts of my shots to cropping. On that last shot, for instance, if I order an 8x10, it's still OK, but I like the feeling of expanse behind the kids, and that gets lost a bit with 8x10.

So then I can order 8x12, but sheesh it's a lot harder to find framing options for 8x12. I mean, you can do anything with a frame, but I'm looking to buy something inexpensive off the shelf, and the options are just so much more limiting.

Any tips on how to deal with this? Maybe it's just something I need to learn to let go of....

my advice... on shots like this, step back some, or zoom out if you've got a zoom on board. at 8mpx you've got *loads* of data available to crop from, and make a lovely 8x10 at super quality.

Shoot looser, so I can crop. Ugh. That'll be hard. Like leaving the last of the chocolate cake on my plate. Not sure I can do it.

trust me, you can. you've got 8mpx available! i've made and sold 16x20s at great quality from less than 5 mpx.

Hey, it was actually cool enough to wear a beanie...and by the time the sun was going down on the hike out, I was actually glad I had it.

Thanks for looking, and the comments.

Nice shots, it looks like a great place to hike. Your kids did pretty good with their shots as well.

The last shot is special, it has a different quality of light than the rest.

I like that last shot, too. And the others are very good, too. That is you? You have aged since your avatar was shot.

I wish I had that lens...............too.

(The kids and the landscape would be nice for a day, too.)

About the cropping -- I'm a designer, life long photographer, so when I shot slide film I cropped as I wanted the image to appear -- tightly...

Now that I have 8 megapixels I have all sorts of cropping room available, and I have to force myself to remember to zoom back a little to allow room for cropping -- but it's the most difficult thing in the world. My images just don't look the same when I get them up on the screen. Because they don't look like I wanted the final image to look like I think I ruined the shot!

It's going to be a long transition for me to look at each image and remember not to be disappointed, but to crop in to what I saw. But it's hard! Really hard for me to do that.

But, you know the pros (for stock photos) -- they will stand there and take loads of photos of a good subject at all kinds of different crops -- plus vertical and horizontal versions. So it can be done -- it's just not easy.

I suppose in the end you have to remember your disappointment when forced to crop for a print format and perhaps that will help out in the field.

Thanks for looking and the comments.

Yeah, Ginger. A little older. A bit more gray. Thanks for noticing. ;)

Thanks!

I'm wondering if with a little more curves work, if I can get the light in that one to look a bit more like the last. Just a bit denser. I'll probably give that a shot.

yeah, it's just gonna take some getting used to, framing a little loose so I can crop to 8x10.

Yeah, rightl. Steve with about 30 extra pounds.

Course, if I was a vegan, and got cancer, I'd probably drop a few, too.

Agreed, that last one is great. If have a hard time remembering to leave room for cropping, too, so you're not alone. You can buy pairs of frame edges at local craft stores (like Michael's). A pair of 8s and a pair of 12s would do the trick. I don't know how the price compares to a ready-made frame in a standard size, but it's an option for you.

LOL, yeah, or didn't have a total desk job, eh? What an incredible weekend this was. You already know I love that last shot.

Off to post my poppies thread (and drive some snowbelt folks crazy...I always remind people, waving gorgeous grasses now and absolute tinder come summer).

Lovely set David, & that last one is special!
I think your daughter is very photogenic and seems to be very comfortable in front of the camera. My daughters have got to the age (11 & 13) where they object strongly every time I try to take a shot. So take plenty while they still let you :D

Thanks, Lynne, Gubbs. Yeah, I take 5x as many pictures of her as anyone else.

It was a great weekend.

Off to look at a poppies thread!
