OK, this is a personal peeve, but I can't stand sepia. Maybe it's because it's been done too much and it's too easy. Or maybe it's just because I don't see the advantage over good old B&W.

That aside, the basic problem with the shot is the focus. The out of focus petals are in the center of interest. Doesn't work. It's as if you wanted to get a traditional romantic portrait of a handsome model, and the eyes were OOF.

Hey epi,

I would think that the angle the light is coming from on this shot would help add dimension and depth to this shot. It still seems pretty flat to me though. Maybe another flower (or anything) in the background might help w/ bring dimension to this.

Looks like you had a paper thin DOF on this shot. Try closing that aperture a bit and get the entire flower in focus.

As Gary so eloquently mentioned. Sepia is kind of worn out. This DOES NOT MEAN it shouldn't be used though. It just needs to be used sparingly and in the right cases.

(On another note:
Gary, I find it slightly ironic that your so harsh on epi for using sepia color conversion when your website mug shot on your banner is a dramatic sepia toning.)

Was I being "so hard"? All I said was that it's a personal peeve.

I don't think my pic is sepia. Sepia is sort of brown. But my pic is an over-saturated bright red-orange -- because that's the basic color scheme of my site.

You said it best regardless: sepia isn't wrong; sometimes it's just the right thing.

I agree with the other comments about DOF, but I also wanted to suggest you could post the color version if you wanted some additional critique beyond sepia is not working. Or you could just re-shoot and move on with your life. :D
