View Full Version : Domain forwarding question

I registered with 1and1.com - domain name is mafotografix.com
I spoke with the 1and1 tech guy and he said all I needed to do was to do a 'destination' forward to 'http://www.mafotografix.smugmug.com'

He said I don't need to do the CNAME thingy.

However, typing in http://www.mafotografix.com is a no show :(

Any advise, anyone?

Thanks in advanced.

Seems to work for me.

Maybe you just needed to give it some time for the DNS servers to sync with the new forward information?

CNAME your domain to www.smugmug.com (http://www.smugmug.com) and set your domain in your control panel :thumb you can also set an a-record to our IP address.

So, here's the thing. Why would 1and1 know more about our business than us :D

You MUST CNAME, forwarding is bad. Hitting http://www.mafotografix.com/gets you to this page on SmugMug: http://www.mafotografix.smugmug.com/

Whereas, if you were properly CNAMEd, you'd still be on http://www.mafotografix.com/, and you won't have potential password (gallery, or site pwd) or cart issues.

Holler back if we can help. But CNAME is our supported way of doing it :thumb

Thanks guys. I'll go call 1and1.com tech now with these instructions from you all. Will let you know.

When you say CNAME your domain ie the alias is 'www.smugmug.com' correct?

I did visit that link initially and contacted 1and1.com and then got the forwarding instructions. Went one round and back here.

I'm interested in what the A-Record is about and where would I find your IP address if I wanted to go the A-Record route? Or is that too complicated and I should just stick to CNAMing.....

Please, follow our instructions, don't listen to 1and1, thank you.

Yes, I'm following your instructions. I'm on the line with 1and1.com tech right now.

He's showed me how to CNAME and also how to do an A-Record (Thanks Andy, I found the IP address 63.81.134.23) - read the caution about possible IP changes, so I'm going with CNAMing.

Now I just need the correct CNAME.

A little confused here. Ivar said to CNAME to 'www.smugmug.com (http://www.smugmug.com)' (the website said that too).

You are telling me to CNAME to 'www.mafotografix.com (http://www.mafotografix.com)' aka 'your' domain ?

I'm confused :(

Right now I have CNAME set to alias 'www.smugmug.com'

I'm sure once I get this right I'll be good! So close I can feel it.

Please, follow our instructions, don't listen to 1and1, thank you. You can find the IP addy, just click the last link on that help page, "I don't want to type www..."

Thanks!

I also have a 1and1 account. A word of caution: when you use a CNAME with 1and1, you lose the MX record (email capabilities) for that domain. There may be work-arounds using subdomains, but unless I can get this problem resolved and soon (already two weeks and a dozen emails back and forth), I may be looking for a new registrar and host. Suggestions?

Joker is really fine, I use Godaddy, too.

Joker is really fine, I use Godaddy, too.
Does Joker supply hosting as well as domain registration? I can't seem to find this information on their website. I even emailed them and their response is rather dubious:

Joker.com offers a free of charge email-forwarding feature.

You can create up to 30 mail addresses per domain.

It is also possible to create "catch all"-addresses: If you enter "*" instead of "your_name" as "Mail-Address", all emails not matching any other address you created will go to the "*" entry.
Additionally, a special account "postmaster" does exist, which can be modified, but not deleted.

Current limits are:
30 mail addresses per domain
10000kB as max. size of a single mail
200 mails per day per address

It's only possible to use the email-forwarding feature, if you use the Joker.com nameservers.

If you want to use the Joker.com nameserver the following steps are necessary:

1) Login to the "Service Zone" with the email of the owner-c, admin-c or tech-c
2) at the "Domain Settings" section select "Domain - Modification" and choose the domain in question
3) in the field "Nameservers" use the "Change" option and select "Switch to Joker.com Nameservice".

If the domain is set to the Joker.com nameserver you can use the "Nameservice, Mailaddresses and URL-Forwarding" feature at our "Service Zone".

Please note:
A newly created mail address (or a changed target address) has to be activated by answering the "activation email" being sent to the "Target Mail-Address".

If you are looking for information about the mailforwarding please go to our FAQ section 10.

We hope, this answers your questions to your satisfaction.

Best regards,

your Joker.com team

My www.mafotografix.com (http://www.mafotografix.com) works now but I noticed that once I click on the other nav pages, it reverts back to www.mafotografix.smugmug.com/ (http://www.mafotografix.smugmug.com/)....

Is that correct if its supposed to be CNAMEd?

When you CNAMEd your account, did you enter the alias as 'www.smugmug.com' or 'www.yourdomain.com'?

I didn't really get an answer back from anyone to confirm.

It's because you have hardcoded the nickname.smugmug links in your navbar. Change them, and you'll be fine. That's your code :D

Man I hope you come back and read this post. Hellooo? Are you there? I was seconds away from making the cname change at 1and1. You have email problems? I absolutely CANNOT be without my email! How is it going with that? Anybody else have problems with 1and1?

That's what I found out.

I've sent a couple of test emails to myself. So far I have not received any emails to my forwarding address. Before CNAMing I was able to receive them.

Now, I simply use the webmail.1and1.com to access my emails.

OK now even my webmail.1and1.com doesn't work. It can send out emails but cannot receive.

This is bad. I may just have to revert back to forwarding unless Smugmug points their MX Record to #MA00.1.1and1.com

I can't run my business using a free yahoo.com email, it is just not professional.

I was told that if Smugmug had email feature, CNAMing would not be a problem with emails using domain names. I'm just passing the information from 1and1.com tech.

I just want my email to work.

Ok, here is the scoop. You can do a cname on your control panel. It tiny print below it says something like "I understand...blah blah blah....I get screwed on my email...." I'm so glad I read your post before hand. Basically, with 1and1 and cname...you will lose email associated with that domain. End of story. Now, I am waiting for my domain transfer to godaddy...to make the cname change there. Their change includes MX properties...aka....email!

And I know what you mean by free emails....NOT professional.....I live through thunderbird and my email@domain.com!

How long will the transfer take? And how much is GoDaddy charging you? I have orders going to take into effect this weekend. If I do it now will it be in time?

Thanks. Mike

Ok, transfer finally went through this morning. It took 7 days. I unlocked my domain through 1and1 before initiating the transfer. Had I not done that, it would have taken longer. Today, I made the CNAME change. I am only confused on the nameservers part. Is it supposed to be on default, custom? That I am not sure of. Now I just have to wait for my ISP's cache to run out to view my site. Oh...please anybody out there...type in my site and see if it pops up. You have never visited so your cache doesnt have my old site. The old site's background is black. The new one is almost white. Let me know! If you cant see the site, something may be wrong. Then I need Andy's help!
