Can someone please tell what this tree (photographed in south east Queensland) is called? Its unusual root arrangement makes it an interesting subject.

It's a tree with ariel roots, maybe something like a Moreton Bay Fig (Ficus macrophylla) or Chinese Banyan Tree (Ficus microcarpa).

It's a tree with ariel roots, maybe something like a Moreton Bay Fig (Ficus macrophylla) or Chinese Banyan Tree (Ficus microcarpa). The Banyan is a distinct possibility based on the image you linked to, but it doesn't look like any Moreton Bay Fig I've ever seen.

Thanks for your help. The sun should be up in Australia by now so any suggestions from that quarter that will corroborate or refute your suggestions will also be welcome.
