Hi you'll :wave
As I related earlier I had a choice between an easy heron shot and atough eagle shot. I opted for the eagle and saw the heron fly off as Imoved past him to take shot at the eagle.
I ended up with this medicore perch shot :uhoh

and as I was leaving I saw that the Great Blue Heron had flown to a pond just a few yards away so I got a shot of him too. :D

Still a good idea Harry. You went for the toughie and didn't get what you envisioned. Welcome to my world......LOL
Just kiddin :rofl The perch shot isn't bad, at least you got most of the bird. But, the lighting was tough for that one. I think that's where a Better Beamer might have helped. It looks like you were far enough away that it probably would have helped light up the bird's right side. Same with the flying shot. I think it would have lit up his wings some.
Those really nice bird shots are tough to capture :uhoh Talk about your low hit rates....lol But, what an acheivement when you do finally get a good one :thumb
Thanks for sharing and glad you weren't eaten by gators, or didn't get swallowed up by quicksand :lol

Steve,
You really need the long lenses for these types of shots, 400mm just won't cut it. Now I need to figure out how to explain to my wife why I need the 500mm/f4 lens and the 1.7 and or 2.0 tcs (a tad over $6000). Then I have to explain why I need a new camera (the flash sync of the D100 tops at 165/sec). It should come out to a bit over $10,0000. Then I can take some real birdie pics. This is gonna be one hard sell. Pray for me. :uhoh

Gosh those are good, Harry. I am so tired of talking lenses and money, to myself, then I see photos like those. I love the detail, in addition to the colors, in addition to the subjects..........just great all the way around, and a good choice.
Hey, my birds flew into trees, I have photos of those, too. Tee tiny dots, but they are often in focus.

Harry,
How well I know about needing long lenses :cry As I have said in a few other threads, even 500mm isn't long enough sometimes. The TC's are a good idea :thumb
Awwwww, Linda is such a sweetie (I mean, look how long she's put up with you.....lol) she won't bat an eye about having to take in boarders to support her dear hubby's passion :lol OK, so you're right, I'll pray for you. :rofl
RE: flash sync. The 20D tops out @ 1/250 but the internal and external flashes have high-speed sync options. Are you sure the Nikon flashes don't allow you to use whatever speed you want, like the Canon flashes do?

Hey Ginger,
I'm glad you didn't see my response to Steve above. I'm glad you enjoyed the pics. We talk about gear a lot but it all boils down to the pics. Your shots are fine btw.

What kind of tripod and head are you going to use for your 500mm and 1000mmm lenses Harry? You won't be hand holding them much - trust me on this. They won't be cheap either, will they??

Yeah I'm probably going to go for the Wimberly sidekick and a new and better tripod. What the heck another 700-800$ to be added to the cost. :slosh
