Here's a shot of my neighbor's dog for your viewing pleasure... she reminds me of the dog in "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" for some reason.

Cute dog-- your WB and focus seem a little off (her left eye looks in focus, right one is a little soft). I'll bet if you shot a few more photos and spent some time with the dog outdoors, you could capture some better images though.

I should have pointed out the this is existing (low) light flashless, taken with a 50mm 1.4 wide open at 1600ISO, 1/50th. In other words, this shot was taken in pretty dark conditions. The house this was taken in is an old New England Cape, and the ambient lighting has that "glow" to it that just seems to enchant older homes, so this image actually captures what I saw pretty well.
I agree with you 100% about the focus, but at 1.4 I don't think I could have done much to improve it.
