View Full Version : Higher level of organization—how?

I have a bad feeling this may be a dumb question and the answer might be obvious if I just look around...but I'm wondering, how does one create a higher level of organization than simply creating new galleries from my default home page?
For example, I took one trip that uses 12 galleries alone (in this case, a gallery being like a "chapter" in the "trip book."
Now I want to post photos for a different trip...but don't want to end up with 200 galleries all on the same page.
What are my options?
Thanks!

Have you set up categories and then subcategoeries?

I'm sure there are other options too, but here's what I've been doing for my travel galleries.
When I have a trip for which I want to post more than one gallery, I set up a subcategory for the trip. For a trip I took to Nova Scotia last September, within the Travel category I set up a subcategory called "So near and yet so far away - September 2006". I then created 8 galleries within that subcategory. So the subcategory shows on my Travel page, and when I click that I get the actual galleries. You can see this example by starting at http://denise.smugmug.com/travel.
I hope that gives you at least one idea you can work with; I'm sure there are other ways to solve this "problem" too.

Normally, I have a single "event" as a gallery. However, I recently wanted to have a single trip as a series of sub-galleries, with a summary gallery highlighting the details of the event.
As a Power user, it is possible to use a series of hacks to generate this sub-gallery structure.
See
http://pbolchover.smugmug.com/By%20Date/270309
where the San Diego & San Francisco: January 2007 (http://pbolchover.smugmug.com/gallery/2413328)
gallery contains multiple sub-galleries.
I keep meaning to write up my technique. To summarise you need to
* Force the summary gallery into journal style
* Use javascript to alter clicks on the photos in the journal style to go to required galleries
* Create the sub-galleries as galleries in the category http://pbolchover.smugmug.com/Hidden
* Use javascript to change the parent category listing for each of the sub-galleries

Thanks Denise and others—the category/subcategory option works for me (the way you set it up Denise seems fine)...but how do I get only categories to show up on my home page...then only subcategories on the next, etc?
Does this happen automagically once you create multiple categories/subcategories?
Thanks again,
Scott

When you look at your highest level page of galleries or categories (and you're logged in), you will see this on the right side of the screen above your categories or galleries:
display: categories . galleries
Mine is set to display categories. So starting from http://denise.smugmug.com/galleries you will see all of my categories. If you then click on Travel, you will see a combination of sub-categories and galleries. That is because I have only used sub-categories on some of my travel galleries - there was no need if there was only one gallery for the trip.
If you want the first page where you display (your home page in your question) to show categories, then select categories for your display choice.
Hope that helps.

Thanks Denise! That did it. (I promise I'll look harder next time.) :)

I'm glad I could help! Sometimes the simpler things are the hardest to find...
