View Full Version : Assignment #27: Straight Up
Nikolai
Mar-15-2007, 07:48 PM
Well, I guess we all got some R&R on triangles (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=55991). It's time to get something more advantageous again.
This week's theme is straight up.
It means - get your camera, point it to the skies and shoot. Chances are, you would only get the skies. But you can also get: clouds, trees, skyscrapers, canyon walls, ceiling or, maybe, the bottom of the car (that is, if you're in the pit:-).
In any case, that's the idea. What you get out of it - it's up to you:-)
As always: fresh pictures, moderate post-processing.
For the rest of the basic rules and index please check out this sticky (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=41800).
Let's shoot straight up! :-) :wink

since I've played. So....this is up albeit not straight up as I'd have to be in the water LOL
BTW...this taken just a few days ago...will go for more this week.

But it does not count :dunno
1) old :-(
2) not straight up :-(
I'll be looking for more from you! :lust

Great, thank you very much!
#2 is a truly nice picture.
As a piece of advice: set your camera on timer, lay it flat on the gound (on a mat/piece of clothing), press the shutter and step back a few yards - or not, if you want to take a cool self portrait :wink

As a piece of advice: set your camera on timer, lay it flat on the ground
(on a mat/piece of clothing), press the shutter and step back a few yards - or not, if you want to take a cool self portrait :wink Nikolai.
You know it's not that simple.
Let me explain why I think so:
1. Camera on the ground: I've done it (:rofl) and it doesn't work well because of the point of focus, unless you calculate it and switch it off on the lens before taking the picture.
2. A self portrait: No never. I am very ugly in that position. I'm too old for that. I have to take care of my image :D.
Tips
1. Lay on the grass if it is not wet.
2. Get a tree or a lamp and the trails of a plain. ( I almost got one this afternoon )
Cheers :thumb
But here you have two more

The dead branch is not dead. :D
It is a plant which produces grapes. (what's the English for that ?)
You can see the back side of my house - shot on purpose for you - where they grow.
They grow attaching themselves to the wood structure.
The red cross is on our left.
Spring is coming. So, in a few weeks, all will be covered with leaves producing shades.
Then we will be seated underneath ...:wink

Greetings! I have a couple shots I took this weekend that I believe fit the bill. Both were taken while shooting some kite surfing near the Skyway Bridge in FL.
(link (http://jeffwolfe.smugmug.com/gallery/2610413#137709918)) This one's a bit of a risky angle, and it snuck up on my all of a sudden so I didn't get zoomed in enough. Had to crop a fair bit.

(link (http://jeffwolfe.smugmug.com/gallery/2610413#137710206)) I really like this one. Had to shoot at this angle because of the geography. Not exactly straight p, but sure felt pretty vertical to me :). Shot several of them because the wind was pretty active and the flags were all over the place.

You were, like, right there and you couldn't take a few more steps to the very center and take it straight up instead of 65 degree angle? :scratch
In case somebody is hesitant about how to take up staright up shots properly, here's the techniques our esteemed Dutch friend and bona fide LPS3 judge Messeer Michiel de Brieder uses:

Did you stand on the glass ?
On the ground, where the glass is, I mean.
There are people who can't. :D

My wife didn't like that at all; I think she stepped across once. She let me take the pictures downward!

Jumped on it until my wife told me off :rofl
I would have done the BASE jump too, but it was late and the wind was pretty strong.

Shot this sunday, 4-29-07. I was quite suprised when I was laying on the ground clicking away and here a voice behind me, "what are you doing?" I said Im taking pictures, she said why? I said why not? she said because this is private property. I said, oh well im sorry. Then she said were gonna hafta ask you to leave and took my name. I should of told her they should post it if they dont want anybody there. Theres parking spaces right in front of the thing, its in open grass no fences or signs or anything. Seems to me if they didnt want anybody there theyd post signs especially sense there is painted lines for parking right in front of it.

What is it, anyway? :scratch A water tower, mebbe? Do you have any "conventional" shots of this structure?

Yes it is indeed a water tower :thumb . I dont have a conventional shot of it at the moment, soon though maybe. The hassle was quite comical to me, i dont know what they were so worried about, im sure if i asked they would of said ok, its not like a person cant stand on the sidewalk and take pictures of it, I just wanted a better angle. I found out later that the building that the lady came from is some kind of water station (go figure lol). Im sure it must be owned by the city.

I guess they were afraid you'd poison the water supply by looking at it through the magic glass. Or, on a more serious note, that you were casing the joint and was going to plant the charges later... Mad world..:dunno

:wink Sounds like you were confronted by the local water tower nazi. I doubt she turned you in and if she did it's not likely the cops are paying much attention to her anyway.
Great pic, though!

I went to get something out of my car this morning and my 2 year old son was with me. He kept saying "cow! Cow!" (his word for cloud) so I looked up and there was a rainbow over my head! I'm so glad he was with me, because I was feeling grumpy and not paying attention to the beautiful morning.

I was remembering this assignment, yesterday late evening, in Lisbon.
I was sorry that my tripod doesn't turn 90 degrees up. :dunno
I didn't want to lay down on the floor because the light was too poor and I could not handle the camera.
On the other hand, the ground is in stone, too cold and dirty for my taste to lay down... :wink

Yes, it is the idea.
Unfortunately, your image, while being a nice and clean abstract one, doesn't give enough visual clues to understand what we're looking at, and, therefore, direction of the shot. Let's try wider angle (to incorporate some context) or a different, more easily recognizable, subject.

I wouldn't call it straight up though, since you're obviously angling. It's more like a VP entry, IMHO.
