I thought I read that your own domain (.com) comes with the professional SmugMug account, but it wont let me so far. Do I seriously have to pay someone else to host it (i.e. Joker, GoDaddy, etc.)? Or perhaps is it not working right now because i'm on the free trial? Can someone please explain? Thanks.

No the .com does not come with the purchase of a "PRO ACCT".......you do NOT have to pay someone else to "host" it, BUT You do have to register it (purchase) at a registrar like GO DADDY....which I use and have for several years [and also highly recommend them].....and also GoDaddy was giving a free web based email for free....so you get your domain name their (www.YourdomaninName.com) and they will give your an email address of your choice at YourDoamainName.com for free......your email could look something like...YourName@YourDoamainName.com.....for no extra charge....and their is a tute for stting this all up....so your domain will not be hosted by GO DADDY...just parked there and that is free also.......

Hope this has helpped

And when you get it, you can go here for how to hook it up with your SmugMug Account:

Okay, that helped, somewhat. My fault though, i'm apparently completely domain/website/hosting illiterate! I can't even get to www.godaddy.com (http://www.godaddy.com). Everytime I try it takes me to a porn site. So I deleted cookies and everythign and it's still doing it! Why can't I go to godaddy.com without it taking me to porn sites?!?!?

Okay, apparently my laptop rejects godaddy and immediately transfers it to a porn site.

Anyhow, are you recommending I pay the basic $8.95 with GoDaddy to 'register' my website? Then i can follow the steps on smugmug to connect the two. It should be that easy? No one else to PAY to get this stinking site up? LOL. Thanks.

So I went ahead with Godaddy and am trying to follow the steps to connect it with smugmug. But the step that says 'Click on Total DNS Control and MX Records.' well that is not there! It's no anywhere on the godaddy page so where do I go from here?

Thanks.

Didi,

If your computer was redirecting your manually entered www.godaddy.com (http://www.godaddy.com) to a porn site you have a problem.

You need to run a virus scan, and also run a privacy scan. There are all kinds of nasty programs that will hijack your computer and send you to porn or scam internet sites.

Products like Adaware from www.lavasoftusa.com and SpyBot Search and Destroy from www.spybot (http://www.%3Cb%3Espybot%3C/b%3E).info can help remove this stuff.

I had a friend that got one of those programs on her machine and randomly throughout the day a porn site would pop up full screen on her machine. It took her a few days to figure out something was causing it and it took us a few more days to get all of the crap off her machine.

Good luck

As for the Total DNS Control...

Click on Domain Names
Click on Manage Domains
In the list that appears click on your domain name
Total DNS is dead center of the page that loads.

Keep in mind that if your domain is new it may take a few hours to set up and make the total DNS control active.

So I went ahead with Godaddy and am trying to follow the steps to connect it with smugmug. But the step that says 'Click on Total DNS Control and MX Records.' well that is not there! It's no anywhere on the godaddy page so where do I go from here?

Doc,

If my existing GoDaddy acct (which I want to point to my smugmug acct) shows the following: "Total DNS: (not hosted here)", are there any options? Does Smugmug have name servers I can use for instance?

Thanks for the help!

You want to use the hosted domain servers at GoDaddy. It is the first option on the GoDaddy nameservers page. Set that and you should see the Total DNS and MX records appear after a few minutes.

SmugMug does not have nameservers that can be used for this. The domain host provides that.
