You've captured a nice moment here - the turn of the paddle and especially the water spray.
Somehow though I really want to see more of the scene to the right of the kayaker. Where's he going? A horizontal may have worked better here, especially with the kayaker off center, or a vertical that is even tighter (yeah, I don't have that lens yet either). A more visible facial profile would be nice, too.
This is one of those instances where I really try to work the scene grabbing as many different angles as I can - high, low, vertical, horizontal, zoomed in, out, working on my compostion in camera and trying to also catch that "decisive moment." In this situation shooting into the light I'm really watching my exposure making sure not to blow my highlights. If I have time, I'll quickly glance at my DSLR readout on the first couple of shots to make sure I don't have any "blinkies" on my screen (showing blown highlights).

Very cool (and brave) that your first post was in the whipping post!
Looks like you were going for a silhouette shot. If that's the case. This shot is over exposed. I can still see detail in the kayaker.
I don't mind the highlights being blown. Whenever you shoot on water towards the sun your gonna have tons of specular highlights.
I would try opening up your DOF (http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html) and getting your shutter speed up into the nosebleeds (f18 1/3000ish). Not sure what your EXIF (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exif) was though.
Welcome to dgrin! Keep shooting and posting!

Thanks to seastack and SloYerRoll for your helpful comments. I had a group of kayakers crossing the sun in front of me. I knew I could get a silhouette style shot, but was not sure of the best settings.
This picture has been cropped from a larger one, maybe I'll go back to the original RAW file and adjust exposure and composition.
PS I have now included ExiF with the picture.
Thanks once again
