On my Sunday Hike, I took a bunch of shots of this cacti. I was there at the wrong time of day (although I'm not sure what the right time of day would be--more on that later). The pictures came back flat looking. In this shot I'm shooting westward into the sun, it was almost 3:30. Sun's above, but in the direction I'm shooting.

I'm wondering when the best light for this shot would be, and I'm gonna try going back at sunset, sunrise/early morning. I'm not yet happy with the compo, lighting, etc., but I think that there could be a good shot in this scene, I've just got to get it right.

Anyway, this is what I got Sunday. RAW processed, Velvia action, sky added (yeah, it needed a lot of help).

I think its kinda cool and I see some kind of color aboration. I would try alot of reshoots closer wide angle etc. Without being there it is hard for a photographic neanderthal for like me to give any advice:D . Like I said I like it but I bet if you work this area a hot shot is gonna come from this:thumb

Thanks, yeah there's a bit of a flare in there, I think. That's prolly the biggest drawback of the 17-40 f4L, is it's prone to flares.

I like the backlit quality. In cases like this I use my fill flash (flash set to low, depending on my distance from the subject). With a little experimentation, you might get what you are looking for.

Probably early am light would be best.

I tried fill, it didn't work. Doesn't mean it won't, just that I didn't get it right.

Early morning light would put the sun behind me when shooting this. I'm gonna try that, too. Also later around sunset.
