View Full Version : Documenting my Customization Codes

Does smugmug have the facility to automatically export all customization codes into a text file?
Right now I'm a newbie to smugmug, taking in many technical help from this wonderful forum. To make sure that I don't break my code, I copy/paste each section (e.g. CSS, javascript) to a text file and keep this for future reference or if I ever I need to go back to the code.
Has anyone done a similar thing - documenting one's customization codes.
Thanks.

Hi, just highlight each section, copy and paste to a txt file. If you need me to show you how, no problem, just give us your smug site and we can help!

That's what I have been doing the past days: going to each section, then copying/pasting each section to a text file.
I'm looking for an automated process, like exporting in one step, the entire customized codes in CSS, javascript, header, etc. to a text file. I guess this is not available yet in smugmug :dunno

It's not, I guess because it's pretty convenient just to copy and paste to a text file...

I'd love to have a backup button. :D

I second that motion. I've been manually copying and pasting into a word doc with tables created for each section. It takes a few minutes, however it would be great to have it automated with a "backup" or "export" button.

Avoid Word, and use a text editor.

Avoid Word, and use a text editor.:nono It is important that you do not use word to make / edit a backup file or your site customizations.
Word puts in a bunch of extra crapola and changes various important things to characters that browsers have problems with (e.g. quotation marks).

Rather then an automated process to backup your code to a .txt file I was thinking it might be nice to have a feature that let's you have multiple versions of your code but only 1 can be set to active at a time. For example, maybe you have your site setup and it's functional but you're not completely crazy about the look. It would be cool if you could save the current code as version 1 and then create a copy of the code in a 2nd version. Once you get both versions to where you want you can request friends, family or even users from this community to review your 2 versions and provide feedback to determine which one you should activate. This feature would also provide the backup you were wanting. I'm thinking out loud so forgive me if I don't make sense.

I work on dozens of sites a week. It's literally a 30second job to copy and paste the customization to a txt file and save it....
Could we provide a feature that does this? Probably - but we have other things that are way more important that we're working on.
So, customizers: Back up your stuff! :deal

I can appreciate your opinion as probably someone that knows what they want to accomplish with code and is able to execute it quite effeciently. However, I think this site, smugmug, is probably going to attract more users like myself who aren't so comfortable with coding and who don't plan to become experts in it either. I was simply suggesting a feature that would provide some "play" room with a bonus feature of backing up code as suggested by the original poster in this thread. I'm sure the "new features" list is quite extensive and, yes, this request is probably not at the top of it but this isn't a question of 30 second jobs vs features which in your opinion are more important. This is about the average smugmug user having the comfort of knowing that they can continue to push the creative edge while developing their site all while knowing their "working" code is safe and protected in the background.
I agree, copying and pasting is easy but I can't tell you how many times "Auto-save" in Microsoft Word has saved me. I guess I could go hit File-Save every few minutes but why?
Plus, I would think that you would want to encourage new ideas not diminish them.

You do make sense - and it would be cool. Some development tools would give you that facility. But then again, as Andy is saying, the smugmug team has better things to do than give us this nice-to-have tool.
Oh well, back to the cut-and-paste-to-text-files. I already have several files saved from one project.

We do, absolutely- it's just that this one at least has an easy work-around for us customizers.
Consider the feature request added :D
