View Full Version : SEXY Redhead .. MI4

Hello folks. Worked up some more shots from MI4. Had the good fortune to shoot with Kevin on the West coast. We visited Ft. Desoto on the previoius Saturday, to MI4's "official" start. Unfortunately the weather wasn't exactly good. (have you heard this complaing before? lol). Strange day for shooting. Socked in with clouds...and off and on drizzle made shooting a bit challenging. It was strange though. At times..there was light despite being heavily overcast. It was sort of like shooting in a light box. Made for some "unusual" results.

These pics were not "messed" with in photoshop..but surely don't look exactly like a typical "photograph". I think they look more like a marker rendering or a watercolor painting. They have that "illustration" look to them. There were no funky business in PS with filters or anything. This is the results of the unusual lighting...and the high ISO of 800 IMO. I like them as images....but photos?

This reddish was very active and animated. I enjoyed shooting him. Would like to get the chance again with some "sweet" light.
Thanks for taking me there Kev. You da man.

Thanks for looking.

The soft light, with its associated reduction in contrast range, helped you capture a lovely series of images.

I think white egrets are lovely in this kind of soft light also, Mike.

What an apt description. As a genuine neophyte you've got me re-thinking what 'good' light is Mike.

Thanks for sharing some uniquely beautiful photographs.

Mike, I think these are awsome! :clap :clap :clap

But when you say that you "like them as images ... but photos ..." I find that very revealing. If photographers in general think this way, it explains a lot. It explains what I've begun to suspect and that is that we are far too dominated by the "rule book" and it stiffles imagination and creativity.

I should probably start a new thread on this subject but it's not likely that many would know what I'm trying to say but I'm getting really bored with a lot of "straight" photography and I'd like to see more of these kinds of images even if it didn't take any special technique to create them. Mike, please don't be apologetic about these images. They are just as valid as any and I think they're great.

Thank you Bob.

But when you say that you "like them as images ... but photos ..." I find that very revealing. If photographers in general think this way, it explains a lot. It explains what I've begun to suspect and that is that we are far too dominated by the "rule book" and it stiffles imagination and creativity.

It became clear I did not communicate my thoughts fully when you headed down the lack of creativity and imagination route. That's never been an issue with me. The cliche' "rule book" doesn't stifle my imagination. You, and I'm sure others have misinterpreted my thoughts and ideas on these images. I like them a lot.

I felt strongly I was on to something with these shots. If not I would not have braved the cold dreary wet weather. I surely would not have stood in the muddy water in the drizzle if I didn't feel strongly about what I saw and wanted to capture with my camera. My point was missed. This was more a film vs. digital issue , rather than any creative or philosophical issue. I like to think the work speaks for itself on this level. My words, however, often get lost with others. Good thing I'm not a writer. :D

Mike, please don't be apologetic about these images. They are just as valid as any and I think they're great.

Im sure some would take offense, myself included. You might give your fellow photogs just a bit more credit than dismissing their intellectual (and creative) abilities. I follow your point about the mundane and typical photography. I didn't think that was an issue here, with these shots. Like I said, this was about the results that the camera rendered. They baffled me a bit.

Hopefully this (albeit somewhat lame) analogy will help explain my thinking and comments a bit better. Let's say one was planning on doing a drawing. They wanted to capture a nature scene they came across. The artist reaches in his artist's tool box and grabs a set of markers to render this subject with.

The artist starts drawing what he sees ..his visualization of the scene. He's putting down his marks with his markers. He's doing this in a manner that he always does. Recalling all the knowledge he has from past experiences and training. He's doing a wonderful drawing. Technically sound...compositionally sound. Just a fine example of his work. He finishes his marker rendering and puts it in his portfolio. Rushing back to his studio to show his fellow artists in anticipation to get some feedback and share his work with others.

Here is the point of my earlier comments. The artist hangs his work on the wall for everyone to see and all of a sudden it looks like he rendered the drawing with color pencils. Yes...the drawing that he thought he used lush deep colored markers, now looks like a colored pencil drawing. Nice in it's own right...but not what he thought he did out in the field.

This is what I felt took place with these images. My comments WERE NOT an apology in any way, shape, or form. I don't usually bother to put up images I don't feel are worthy of viewing. I however felt like the rules or results of production were changed on me. I find this to happen from time to time with the digital camera. I did not experience this phenomenon with the my film cameras. I knew what to expect from the film, but with digital, sometimes I am a bit surprised or baffled with some of the results. This format doesn't seem to be as predictable as film is/was. I don't think this has any adverse effect on the images as it's merit or value. I was just not fully expecting this rendered illustration look from a camera. Like I said, I do like these imaes. Just didn't fully expect the manner in which they were recorded.

Thanks again for taking the time to look and comment. I hope I have cleared a few things up with you. I would hate for you to think us "photographers' are a stifled uncreative bunch. :D

Mike --- I think the soft light works very well here. These are unique images with a special atmosphere not found in the usual front-lit bird portraits that most posters see as their ultimate goal. You seem to have doubts about the merit of the photos. Don't. These are rare shots and great photos. --- John

Mike, I'm very sorry. I have no idea how you misunderstood what I said. I meant no offense to you or anyone. I was trying to compliment you on unique and out of the ordinary pictures and this is the sort of departure from the "regular, correct, staight" shots that I'd like to see more of. Did you get that? I want more of the kind of pictures that you posted here:lust Sadly, many of us seem to think that this sort of creative looking imagery is wrong, and so it gets largely ignored. I'm glad to see that a lot of others here also appreciate a fine and unique picture. Keep up the good work. This is refreshing.

No worries Bob. I got the praise part..and I appreciated it. I didn't mean to sound offended..too badly. I understood where you were coming from on the "likng to see the unusual" images. I'm all for that as well. :thumb Can't worry too much what folks thing about ones work. Please yourself and the heck with the nay sayers. :huh :rofl :D Just felt like some toes may feel they were stepped on with some of the comments. I probably mistook those..as others mistook my meaning of my comments regarding the illustration vs. photograph look to the images. It's all good.

what camera are you using? ( i cant keep track ) i Love the images , but am an artist myself and like illustrated looks and different techniques, whether intential or Happy accidents. i got some great SLOW motion blur stuff that looked like water color paintings, straight our of my camera, I like the surprise . I think some cameras that have an auto noise reduction have a greater liklihood or doing that in camera.

I think a few of those would make great large prints for a wall !
