Been there, done that. I got rid of my son, then I red tagged the pets (red tag= no replacement). Now when I want to go away at a moments notice for a weekend the deck is cleared for action. The last time I had a pet and went on a vacation I spent more on the dog's accomodations while I was away than I spent on myself.
