Have you ever gone to the fossil cliff in Capitola? I understand sometimes chunks full of fossils fall off and land on the beach.

Give your next trip to the beach an Indiana Jones-style twist by heading for the charming seaside town of Capitola in Santa Cruz Co. (take the Capitola Bay Ave. exit from Hwy. 1).


At the southern end of the pretty town beach is a large sea cliff containing fossilized shells from the Pliocene epoch - a mere three to five million years ago. You'll see plenty of fossil mollusks embedded in the rocks, and most likely some in loose rocks just lying around on the ground.


It's legal to collect fossils here, so you can take a rock or two home, but please use restraint.


If you and your kids enjoy the experience, you may want to return another day with proper fossil-collecting gear: a geologist's hammer, a chisel, goggles, helmets and a carrying case of some kind.


Precautions. The fossil-bearing cliffs are accessible only at low tide - check a tide table before you go. Stay a safe distance away from the bottom of the cliffs to avoid the possibility of being bonked by a falling rock; bicycle helmets can give some head protection to kids. At the gulch, you will be entering New Brighton State Beach; no fossil collecting there without a special permit.

WoW!!! I would have guessed the first image was shot with a lot longer glass than 300.. He must have been a lot closer to shore than I realized. Great shots.

I'll dig out an aerial shot, but if you're standing at the Lighthouse at Steamer Lane, and the waves are coming at the right direction it's almost like you're "there"

The other 3 were very good shots. But, this one is a wallhanger :thumb :thumb It reminds me of pics I used to see in Surfer Magazine, of the big breaks in Hawaii, about 40 years ago. A surfer, partially silhouetted against a background of nothing but a wall of angry water.

Just remember 'gus, that one of the advantages of the f2.8 teles, is NOT that you wil shoot it wide open (although you may), but that the autofocus system has one or two stops more light to work with so it focuses quicker and more accurately too.

I am compassonate 'gus, but I am also a realist and aware that really good tools are a joy to use, and lesser tools may not be such a joy. They may be adequate.

Tamron makes a 300mm f2.8 for $2999 with a $500 rebate, but would you really prefer that to the white lens from Canon?
The Canon 300 F2.8 IS is what Andy Wheeler shot the surfer's with.

Tamron also makes a 200-500 f5-6.3 Di which has gotten pretty good reviews and costs $879. A very useful range of zoom, but not very bright for viewing and focusing. I like most of Tamron's Di series of lenses. But most of them ARE F2.8 or so. Read about the 200-500 Di here

As an alternative, how about a 600mm f8 mirror lens made by Sigma? For $399. But no aperature adjustment as with most mirror lenses. And funky bokeh typical of the mirror lenses.

Lots of different options - I showed EOS lenses because I use EOS lenses but these are available for Nikons also....

I can find fast glass or more inexpensive glass. I just cannot seem to find inexpensive FAST long glass and I have looked for a long time :dunno I wish I could find it, I wish someone would make it, but nobody does make good cheap FAST telephotos - must be some reason for that. :dunno

'Gus. Used, previously owned, whatever is always a solid choice. Waxy's
got some experience in that arena. There a few places to look around.
