I was at Central Park waiting for the snow to drop. The snow never came, so I took this pic instead. This is "The Mall" walkway, featured in numerous movies.

Canon 50mm f/1.4
Exposure: 1/60 @ f/8
ISO: 1600

(If this is too wide, I'll take it down. The smaller image did not provide enough image detail.)

Nice! I like that lone red-coated walker at the far end of the walk. That is a person, isn't it? Anyway, lovely shot.

I wanted you to see this cropped and placed on a darker color. I think it now shows that detail even more and by placing the person in red close to the edge we notice them more. As you said, great detail and BTW who needs snow? :clap

To me the first pic is much stronger!
The seats in the front really surge me in, that effect is gone by the crop.
Great atmosphere & comp on the #1! :clap

You have taken a lovely picture and I think that Marc's modest crop makes everything that is attractive about your photograph even more appealing. I was very impressed with Marc's discussion of cropping at the 2006 dGrin shoot out in Utah last May during his technical talk to the group on the last day (I think it was). He demonstrated with some of his own pictures and I realized that judicious cropping (without necessarily being restricted to specific dimensions) can be an excellent tool even when editing good work. Marc definitely knows what he is talking about. Of course, that is why he is an artist in residence. :clap:clap

Thanks for the crop suggestion Marc. With my original image, the composition/story I meant to portray was the feeling of walking through Central Park on a cold winter day. The point of interest I tried to bring forth was the walkway.
Your crop tells a different story. The point of interest lies more on the trees. Nice crop nonetheless. :thumb

Hi,
I took this shot a few falls ago. Essentially almost the same location, but shooting about 25 yards further West in Central Park and directly to the West of the Mall. The Park is always ripe with shooting possibilities....

Took this one in Winter of 2001....one of my favorites even though I had a "heavier" PS hand back then:

Hi,
I took this shot a few falls ago. Essentially almost the same location, but shooting in the opposite direction (from North to South) in Central Park and directly to the West of the Mall. The Park is always ripe with shooting possibilities....

That's a beautiful picture. Visited your Smugmug page. Good stuff!!

I much prefer the original uncropped version.

I much prefer the original uncropped version.

As do I. The walkway reaching into the lower corners is far more pleasing than the bench rails being cut off. The red coated person is not that interesting to me, more of a distraction.

Some times I think I have just been in the bush tooooo long.
The one thing to consider is what I call "suggestive subject matter", ya know kind of like the Victoria Secret catalog:deal. When the viewer of an image applies their own individual eye to an image where the whole subject is not shown, different conclusions can be drawn which can retain their attention. In this case the pathway becomes a bit less direct.

I am enjoying your other images as well:thumb
