never thought speedlights could be so much fun!
single nikon SB600 on a stand with 32" white umbrella.....
some photoshop elements work (vignet,gaussian blur........)
c & c would be much appreciated

I think you did a great job...looks good and the blur on the edges add a soft touch to it.

I really like this shot! Specifically, I like:
You have shadows on her face to give it depth without too much shadow.
There's highlights there as well to add interest.
You have some catchlight in the eyes.
No glare on the glasses
The soft vignette is almost perfect
She's a very beautiful young lady
Her smile is very warm and inviting
And, it's easy to believe I have a sense of her personality
On the Con side:
I'm still looking for some sort of detractor. Haven't found it yet!Simply, a very wonderful portrait!

This is simply a beautiful, single light portrait. You have captured the look of an old world oil painting. I've been trying for over a year with my SB-800 and have not achieved such pleasing results.
Which camera and lens did you use?
My only thought would be to raise the light a bit to catch the hair and give it a little more light and separation from the dark background. If you do this, you may want a reflector on the right side.

Mitch ......this is on a D70 , 50mm f1.8 at 1/500 f4 , flash was on 1/4 power,
hadn't really thought about the hair light , I will try your suggestion......
