I figured I would show you the Viera Wetlands where I do most of my wildlife shooting. Its at the end of the road leading into a water reclaimation plant. When you enter you see this sign

you turn right towards septage and you down this unpaved road to the entrance and then there's another sign

after this unpromising start you enter the actual wetlans and things start to look up. I love to go there at sunrise

I'm usually the only one there , not counting the birds of course

Its quite peaceful, no horns, no sirens just the morhens and coots sounding off

I love the sound of birds, too. Actually a seagull last night sounded like he was singing. He was communicating something to other birds. It was not a sound I would have expected from a seagull.

I would never, after all those forbidding looking signs think to drive toward septage....

I was wondering what this place looked like, so thank you for the photos. Without directions no one would know that hidden jewel was back there. You are so lucky Trish knew about it and shared it with you.

I still can't get over those signs! Do you get the feeling they don't want a bunch of people back there? LOL

Hey Ginger,

After 57 years in NYC there is something magical in going out to the Wetlands at sunrise. On a weekday I'm usually the only person there. The only noise to be heard comes the various birds. I kind of think they are communicating saying "its that crazy guy with his camera again".

I love spending 2-3 hours there in the AM. Its good for the soul.

I'll tell you, I never would have found that place w/o advance notice. The good thing is that its rare to have more than 3-4 folks there at a time. Since the roads are one-way, and narrow it would be a real zoo if too many folks were there at one time.

Hi ya Harry,
I know I have been the evasive good friend for a while but it is nothing more than difficulty with my shoulders and now a new job that has me working long hours.

I did escape on Sunday for a 2 hour soul search at the wetlands. As you know, It was a very grey cold day and just perfect! There were a few other people there this day also. That's the part I don't likehttp://dgrin.com/images/smilies/headscratch.gif . They didn't stay as long as I did so I did finally have the place to myself...LOL. I also MISSED the shot of the day!! A big gator...up high on the shore with one of our littlle blue herons half way down the gators choppers! I almost drove passed this gator...but stopped, turned the engine off ...I was soooo excited because the gator just sat there and seemed to not notice me....I got my camera set, tried to shoot from the car but was at an awkward angle...so I slowly opened the door....and in a FLASH...the gator splashed out of sight! GRRRRrrrrrr. Missed shot...
One of the more important things I am learning is to sit still for a while...things do happen...

That's incredible, but really need a telephoto lens for that. Do you see two eagles there? I wonder when they nest, and how long it takes for the chicks to hatch?

You found the eagle's nest. :bow Congrats, I've been looking for that sucker for awhile now w/o any success. I'm going to have to swing by there tomorrow and see if I can locate it too.

You are right about having patience there. If you stake out a spot and wait you will usually get rewarded. Shame you missed that gator shot.

Hey Dee,

Eagle nests are huge affairs. I see one at Cape Canaveral thatw as probably twice the size of this one. Eagles mate for life and have one brood a year. The incubation period is 31-46 days and the young stay in the nest for 78-90 days until their first flight.
