Basically a 1 light setup with a hairlight. It's nice to have a model readily available to practice on. All I need to do is to cook dinner and wash the dishes afterwards :)

Great shots I think :thumb Thanks for the lighting diagram too.
She looks like a skiny Dr. Melfi from the sopranos.

Hmm I don't know if I should take that as a compliment lol. Unless you think the doctor's really hot.
I'm from Bremerton by the way. I just moved here from Bellevue.

LexHeh. She's just the first person that popped into my head after looking at that 2nd shot. :lol3
Bremerton is nice, but that reminds me that I need to update my location. I'm living in England now :D

WOW!! I love these shots.......just a little suggestion though (because of the arangement of the photos) I think that you should try *glasses* image, then the glasses coming off, hair being let down and then cap it off with the beautiful first image! She is very gorgeous and as soon as i saw the *professional* shot I thought.....Business woman by day, Beautiful Bombshell by night!!
Fabulous images.....thanks for giving us your set up also!!

Thx everyone for the great comments.
Mike - Why on earth would you ever think of moving away from Tacoma? Don't you just miss the smell? lol
Malte - Oh yeah it does :) And sometimes when I really need a shoot, I take out the garbage as well. Oh and here's the link for the lighting diagrams. It's in PSD. http://www.kevinkertz.com/fm/LightingSetup.psd.zip
Seneca - First time using a black backdrop, I was worried about the metering but turned out pretty good first time out.
Heather - beautiful bombshell, I wish my wife believed that :) But I'm sure she'd appreciate the compliment.

I'd ditch the hairlight. It really makes this work appear dated.
I'd spend some more time on the skin. Instead of blanketting it with a soft focus, spend time with the clone and heal tool. It will make a world of difference.

To each his own I guess Owen, although that's the second time you've commented on my skin work. To be honest with you I prefer this way of processing over the plastic look. I use blur very sparingly and on a separate adjustment layer.
It's funny you commented that my "little red" submission was wayyyyy overprocessed, when all I did to that image was selective coloring and some dodging and burning.
Critiques are always welcome in my part, that's what allows one to learn. But there's a difference between useful criticism and snide remarks. No one's perfect, well unless you are then I sincerely apologize.
Cheers,
Lex

Thanks for showing your set up as well. Portrait work fascinates me. It's fun seeing how you did it. The results are top drawer. How great is that to have a willing model...for dishes no less...LOL. Keep up the great work.

I really am inspired by seeing these lovely portraits and the diagram! I don't have any real studio equipment but this setup gives me hope for figuring something out. Maybe I can McGuyver something...? :D
Anyway great portraits and your wife is gorgeous!

Yeah, empathy is BYO with Owen... All his critique is whipping post style. He takes fantastic photos himself, and I don't doubt he's right in most of his comments, but maybe he should ease up on the god complex.

God complex? Ouch.
I just say it as I see it. I didn't realise there was something wrong with that.

Sorry about that one, I was out of line. But I think there's something to the old saying "If you dont have anything good to say..." If a picture in your opinion is all crap, take a second to find what's least crappy about it and throw that in there. Makes it a whole lot more encouraging to go fix the faults.

I said what makes it "crappy."
I didn't say it was all crap.
I said, ditch the hairlight (as a general rule), and fix the way you process skin.
Two things that aren't hard to do!

As per the guidelines -
Your wife is pretty. Your lighting ratio is bang on.
However, I'd think about losing the hairlight and trying something else with the skin, such as the clone tool or healing brush.
Out of these two, I prefer the one with the glasses.
Keep posting your work.
Is that truly anymore useful than what I posted to begin with? Does it make you /feel/ better?

I'm certainly no expert, quite the opposite actually. I do believe however that I better represent an average consumer who when looking through a magazine might stumble across a shot like this in an add of some sort. That being so, I find the picture and its feel very pleasing. (And, yes, you're wife's quite attractive but that's not exactly my meaning.) I feel that against the black backdrop that her dark hair might be too lost or hidden without the hairlight.
If I were a customer reviewing the results of a studio portrait shoot, I would be very pleased with shots like this. I think it's very nice work and frankly can't wait to see more. Thanks for sharing the captures here.
