Hey Ed,
Wow that is some beautiful country. I really love 2/3rds of the pic but the dark left and side bugs me. I would either crop out the left side or try a layer mask in PS. With the layer mask I would try to bring out the shadow details on the left side.

Thanks Harry, I hadn't spent any time with this picture at all yet, this is pretty much what you deal with in Yosemite shooting in the afternoon, being at the bottom of a fairly narrow valley, the shadows come into play a lot.
I'll see what I can pull out of it with a a little photoshop work. I did bracket the shot so I have two others to work with.

Gotta be a mask too - A graduated ND filter won't work with that skyline either :wxwax

Why won't the CS shadow/highlight work? I always wonder that........

this is Yosemite? http://williams.smugmug.com/photos/14326032-Ti.gif I'm getting more and more excited about the trip :clap
Excellent shot Ed! I'm the opposite of Harry in this :D I'd darken the trees on the left more, so you'd get more of a silhouette of the trees, I would kick in the snow a tad by slightly brightening it.... all whining aside, I love it :D

This is Yosemite.. This area is back by one of the campgrounds.
I can't wait for May, it should be a lot of fun. I'm anxious to see it through the eyes of someone who has never been there and see the pictures that everyone else brings back.

Ginger,
Shadow/Highlight works OK, on scenes like this, but it's essentially like using a multiply layer on the highlights and a screen layer on the shadows. Because of this, I find that I lose quite a bit of contrast if I use this tool, at all but the lowest settings.
Ed,
Wowzah!!! Like Harry points out, the dark left half is a little distracting, but oh boy what a view :thumb And you even captured a contrail in the shot :clap Like you, I'm really looking forward to May. We are going to have a ball and maybe even come back with a decent pic or two :lol
Thanks for sharing this one and for showing us what January in the park looks like (toooooooooo cold....lol)

Hey Ed,
I like the second version better. The sky and the water look better too. What did you do?
The trade off is that the trees look a bit off, better but they don't look quite natural.
That was a very tough exposure and I can't see how I could have done better. I would still try a crop and see which looks better.
