I might end up in this place (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=palm+springs,ca&ie=UTF8&z=11&ll=33.945069,-116.258011&spn=0.403861,0.844574&t=h&om=1) next weekend. I'll have some business to take care of in the first half of Saturday, but I should be done by, say, 3 pm. Since it's quite a drive I was thinking of extending my stay into Sunday and use it to get some late night/early morning shots.
Any suggestions for vicinity shooting? I don't mind some driving, as long as it's not too far away.
TIA
PS
I just got my 18 million candle power search light, so the night shooting can be tres cool.. :ivar

Nik,
The Agua Caliente Indian Reservation is nearby and has several oasis and canyons that are interesting to hike in.
Here's a shot from there:

Also, if you want to see some snow you can head up the Pines to Palms highway and take the lift up to the mountain tops.

I would recommend Joshua Tree National Park. The entrance closest to Palm Springs should be about 45 miles from Palm Springs.
The Joshua Tree Web Site.

It's sad, it's been so long since I went on our camping trip (2002) that I've forgotten where we went hiking.
Joshua Tree Ideas that I remember going to:
Jumbo Rock
Arch Rock
Hidden Valley Trail
Split Rock
Joshua Tree Ideas that I don't remember going to:
Inspiration Point
Skull Rock
I also got this off the internet, a site talking about Photography at Joshua Tree and it has some tips about sunrise/sunset.

Another idea is to go on the Palm Springs Aerial Tram. You can do some hiking and also some great views. It costs about $20 to go.

Hey Nikolai
I agree that J-Tree is perfect for those night time shots of the palms or rocks. This is a busy time of year there so be prepared to drive out of the park for the night!
Also, if you want to shoot somewhere closer, the canyons that poor off the mountains into town (Palm Springs) have great trails that fallow the creeks and palms and rocks. I might hike one of the trails Sat afternoon to scout with hopes of shooting in the morning light on Sun!!!!!!!!:ivar
