I've gone to the Sno*Drift Rally in Atlanta, Michigan this past weekend.
Very good event with lots of action and opportunities for good shots.
It was cold and snowy but worth it :D

Did Travis Pastrana win that event? He seems to be winning everything he tries. MX, SX, Freestyle, Rally....whatever he does.

yes, he did :D
But i think this situation is due to the fact that the competition level is not very high in US rallies. Travis is just a natural and should advance to a "higher league".

Great shots!

I am at Rally Perce Neige Maniwaki tomorrow, with my S3 IS. Being relatively new to digital photograghy, any tips on getting action shots.

Pastrana was entered in PN, but due to insurance problems, had to withdraw. Rumor has it he will be at several other Eastern Canada Rally events.

Very cool that you're going.
Take picture of every car just to practice.
Try not to have too many of same shots even if you're standing in the same spot. Change location frequently and get different angles of the same turn.
Try to take cloe up shots that show action. Few wide angle pictures with some nice background (maybe spectators, nice sky, interesting landscape and a rally car in it) are OK. During first rally just practice panning with longer shutter times. When the car is relatively more parallel to you, anything slower than 1/160sec will allow you to blur out the background with sharp car if you pann.

Thanx for the tips, unfortunately the organizers were really tight on the security. We ventured into a stage about 2 hours prior to Car 00, parked on a long driveway where we had the owners permission to park, well off the route, and the marshalls forced us out. My friend i spectate with is a well rally figure (codriver) in Canada, a steward at some events - we asked if we could sign up as Marshall to remain on the stage - nope, get off the stage. On the official spectator stage, a school bus took you into the stage(only way in), and dropped you off at the designated areas, couldn't be outside of the security tape. Pretty minimal room to change avantage points.
