Thanks!You can force smugmug small (9 thumbs) if you wish - gallery customization, per gallery, or site wide, if you wish, too. See the first post of my sticky thread, this forum.

I too would like say 9 thumbnails, but forcing to SM small defeats the purpose of having a nice big photo. Why can't the powers of SM allow this customization on a site that allows a huge amount of customization??
I understand a SM large or XL is the works....maybe if it isn't too late - maybe allow us to set the number of thumbs.

Can you elaborate on why you want only 9?

Sure, be happy to. Of course having a Large, or XL photo might change things, but this is my thoughts.
I'm of course basing this on the fact that I look at my site with a laptop screen, and people with a smaller screen might see less of the page at once.
WHen I look at my gallery (all set to SM), I see 12 thumbnails and of course one photo when looking at the gallery. I am a firm hater in having to constantly scroll on websites, and having more than the 12 forces the visitor to scroll. 12 fits, 15 doesn't.
Having only 9, or 12, would cut back on the scrolling, and in my opinion make the site (not just mine of course) look better, more professional. Also, no scrolling - everything is on the screen. Except the footer but no biggie there.
Using my own screen as my own example, 12 would be best, but people with a smaller screen 9 thumbs might be better. (shrug)
I have no idea what thoughts have being considered as far as the SM Large or SM XL, so I have no idea what ideas are on the drawing board. So, until I actually see a gallery set up with SM L or SM XL, I have to base my thoughts on what I have available to me, and what I feel looks the best (or what I just happen to like the best - at this point SM style).
This is why I like the thought of 9, or 12 thumbs while using SM, and not having to go with SM small - I really like the size of the photos desplayed using SM style - I just really hate the 15 thumbs. All I can see the 15 thumbs doing, is reducing the amount of pages there might be on that gallery (29 pages of 15 thumbs/photos on my Friends and Family gallery at the moment).
Just my 2 cents worth.
Derek
Edit: 9 or 12 depending of course on the size of your header, with my current header, 12 thumbs at the max looks the best imo
EDIT #2: I love the changes with this current release, and am thankfull for all the help from SM staff and coders on the site to allow me and others to modify the changes to suit our site/tastes.

I couldn't agree more with Derek. Not having to scroll when viewing images in the Smugmug style (while still retaining the large image size) definitely would improve the look of the galleries. If there was one thing I wish we could change, this would have to be at the top of the list.
Thanks.

I figure it should be fairly easy to implement - but maybe not.
In the customization page, if you choose Smugmug style - then a choice opens up for a choice of thumbnails. Choose the radio button, or choose from a drop down - 9,12 or 15 thumbs.
Just a thought.

I like to keep my gellery (and my site) as clean as possible. I do like the big pictures, but I hate to have my viewers to scroll up and down. My solution, for temporary is to reduce the margin between the thumbs, I still have 15 thumbs, but the viewer don't have to scroll too much down or up.

Checking a few galleries at randome - I see several different margines between the thumbs..some with almost no space, some with the normal space, and some with in between the two...odd. :scratch
Curious as to what code you use though. And do you have to set up code for each gallery. One way to reduce the space is to have all landscape versus having some portrait oriented images...but that doesn't really work for me.

e-cam,

Sure. But first, I must tell you that I'm new at SmugMug and there must be a better ways to do this. Anyway, here's what I did:
#smugmug #thumbnails .photo {
height: 78px;
background:;
margin:0 5px;
}
then... I have to use "Thumbnail Zoom" for all my vertical photos. All of my photos are SmugMug standard sizes (4x6,5x7,8x12...). Again, there must be a better way.

Thanks - I appreciate the code. Their might be an easier way, but I have no idea what it is :dunno
EDIT: now that I think of it, the galleries with all square thumbs look cool, and are nicely spaced (better than the normal smugmug thumbnails)

You got that right! Thanks, e-cam. I had tried this earlier but didn't resize my thumbnails as you suggested, so what I got looked even worse than what I have. I think I'll keep my thumbnails as they are for now until I can figure out a better way to line them up more closely. Maybe the bulk zoom thumbnail hack is what I need.
Thanks.

Samir - I had to change the 78 to 105 to look proper for me, but all my photos are different sizes - I crop to taste while in photoshop.

That's great!!! I just find out, if you change the margin even 1 pixel, it will have unpredictable effect on IE.
Take care.
