subcategory next to a gallery

I thought it would help with navigation on my site (as I added more galleries) - to have the hierarchy Sports -> Ice Hockey -> Carolina Hurricanes. Sports a category, ice hockey a subcategory, and Hurricanes a gallery. As I add more, I could add dates to the names of the galleries.

Well, the idea was good, but the execution a little off. http://pigeon.smugmug.com/Sports
On this page I want the category and subcategory to be displayed together, not in separate boxes. And I want the large thumbnail for both. How can I accomplish that? Would i somehow need to add a subcategory above the "just for fun" gallery level?

Or should I consider organizing this differently? How have you done this?

Maybe I just need to remove the subcategory altogether, and put it back the way it was...

Yes, you'd have to have the gallery that's in a subcat, move it back to the cat. Then you get three together.
