Hello all,
Yep, more boring Junior College Basketball pics :D I was thinking that maybe I'm getting too much action, or too many people in my shots. Or, that even with cropping, I'm still trying to get too much into the frame. So last night I decided, I was going to wander the floor and get closer shots. You know, fill the frame with only a few players and maybe not even have to crop the final result. Anyway, here's a few of what I came home with. Oh yeah, there was a young man shooting the game holding a little slave in his left hand and shooting with his right. He wandered over to say hello and the first words out of his mouth were "Oh, you're one of those guys", meaning a Canon user. Yep, he was shooting a Nikon D70 :rofl His slave even messed up my wb, in a couple of shots :dunno

I only had a chance to process a few, but these are a decent representation. So, what do ya think? Close, like these, or a wider view with more players (smaller size players, but more of them in the frame)?

Thanks for looking,
Steve

IanI agree, maybe even closer. Perhaps even as tight a head and torso to highlight the emotions of the players. Including two players upper bodies might be good as well (shot blocking/shooting, jump ball etc.) Lets see some more. Kinda hard to get a tight head and shoulders shot of someone who's running and jumping. I don't see how it's possible to frame a sports shot that way, unless it happens by accident. More likely to be a crop, I should have thought.

Nice shots, mate, I like the first one. I think your spot is good, and will pay off.

Close is good but you need surrounding players/action to help tell the story.
Well, I guess it depends on what you're shooting for. For me, when I see a
shot near the goal, I want to see what the player was up against. The exception
is, perhaps, a break-away.

LOL Nir,
This is low budget, laid back California Junior College. We're lucky to get 75 people per game...lol Although, I'm right there with you on the idea :thumb

No prob Gus,
Yep, as Andy posted, it was the 85mm F1.8 Canon. It's a sweetie. Great for low light action (as you mentioned, look ma no blur....lol) and super for portraits too :-)

Thanks for looking,
Steve

Thomas,
Thanks for the input and the link. Since it's midnight here, I'll have to wait until morning to check it out.

Thanks again for looking

Thank you Sid :-) Yeaqh, I was just telling Andy, I might go get the 50mm F1.8, cuz that 135mm FOV is tough being so close. With this lens and walls about 12 feet from the baskets, all I can get sometimes is a head and shoulders shot. That's a bit too tight maybe.

Thanks for the comments,
Steve
