First of all, let me say thank you to all the helpful prople here on this site. I have asked my fair share of questions and always received a prompt and accurate answer. But as I have been messing aroud with the customization, I have my site all messed up now. So, instead of asking 30 more questions I am ready to describe what I want and have someone create it for me. I know the purpose of this site is to help me create my own site, but I no longer have the time or patience to do so.

If anyone wants to make some extra money, please PM me and we can discuss my needs. Thanks again everyone!!! :thumb

Post a list of what you're looking for... If I can't help I'm sure the others can.
If the list is within my range I'll PM you for a password so I can help directly... no charge... The paid help, as well as some of the other help heros around here can get in to your code directly and I'm sure they would add code as needed...
Keep all questions in one thread... I did it that way 1 year ago and they taught me and helped me thru 100's of posts of my thread. Andy even wrote about it in his blog... http://blogs.smugmug.com/pros/2006/01/21/customizing-success-story/

I hate to ask because so many of you have already helped me. I might also learn that what I want will require some artwork or not even be a possibility through SmugMug and I might have to get a site designed.

dconnelly
Jan-21-2007, 06:30 AM
Here are a few homepage layouts and designs I like. Not that my site has to operate like these (I know most of them have flash sites) but I want this simple clean look on the homepage.

http://www.nathanieledmunds.com/
http://www.khuner.com/flash.html
http://www.creativefotoworks.com/
http://www.brycevickmark.com/

I would really like to have just one picture on the homepage (no slideshow) a nav bar and my "logo". I say "logo" because I do not really have a logo but I will just use my name and look at a few different font options.

So I guess I can start by removing all of my current photos and layout and start with a white background.

NOW we're cooking!

Spend some time, and WRITE OUT what you want. Use very descriptive words, and be detailed. Invest 15-20 minutes in a good post, and then we all (SmugMug and the HELPERS) can know what you want. Don't leave a single thing out :D

In addition to writing it out, sometimes it's handy to mock up your homepage, in Photoshop

dconnelly
Jan-21-2007, 06:43 AM
I no not have (close your ears) Photoshop yet, only Photosop Elements and I am not savvy enough to do that.

I guess the easiest thing would be to make the picture on the homepage and the logo all one image like on this site http://www.creativefotoworks.com/
I know this will require some Photoshopping and will help however I can. We can then place the nav bar right above the image to look like it is all one box like the above site.

If it is easier, we can set it up very similiar to http://www.brycevickmark.com/. I like them both. Maybe we should start there to avoid the Photoshop work necessary to create the image and logo idea.

Okay, so I'm just putting something together here, have a look at the header, it's not functional yet, but tell me what you think, like it? not like it? what do you want differently? Don't worry about the rest for now. Be sure to check it out, logged out (the way your customers will see it) as well.

Okay, so I moved the galleries from the homepage to another page. Well tackle those later. I made the footer all one color and some other minor stuff.

Do you want something like a guestbook page? info? prices? about you? something else?

Looks GREAT! Here are a couple of suggested changes:
I would like my name in Marker Felt font and photography in Mistral
Can we make just one picture on the homepage and not have a slideshow? It would be great if it were a different picture each time you visited the site.
The picture could be smaller and if possible "framed" like it is on the site we are using as an example.
On the gallery page, can there be individual "bubbles" like on BigWebGuy's site? I think that requires some art work.

Great start...thanks!!!:thumb:thumb:thumb

Thanks :D

dconnelly
Jan-22-2007, 06:27 AM
A couple of different things.

1. When you click "Galleries" on the homepage and it takes you to the Galleries page, what options are there to display each gallery. In other words, is it possible to have each gallery in its own box or bubble (like at BigWebGuy's site) with the gallery name below it?

2. Then oce you choose a gallery, is it possible to display the main image like it is on the homepage (location and size) with the thumbnail pictures of the rest of the galley below the main poicture?

The border looks nice but where did my logo and nav bar go?

The line is perfect now...thanks!I made a landings page for your galleries, like the mockup. Have a look at the 'galleries' link. I need to know if you want the three buttons to link to a single gallery, or to a category, with multiple galleries.

Also, I will need 3 images you want to use. with a 2 wide, 3 high ratio for the links.

There are currently 3 'information pages' (guestbook, information, about me). Let me know if you want those with those names. Also, if you have an image you want to use for any on those three, please put it on your smugmug account.:thumb

Beautiful!!!! Let me work on those pictures. I usually use my laptop but the battery is dead and the cord is at work. I'll try to use iPhoto on my mac to create the images.
Great question about where it links to...I actually haven't even thought about it. I guess when you click "Love" in the gallery page is should take you to a wedding or engagement category page. On that page there should probably be an image to click on for each picture set or for each couple. This number will change so I will need to know how to add an image for a new picture set. We could also just limit it to the say 3 most recent photo sessions. What do you think?

Ivar, nice work. How do you do this stuff? I'm looking to create something similar, no music, but not the standard SmugMug (sorry) look. I've been looking at several sites and I admire that they perservered to get what they wanted. We are all, I wouldn't say fooled, maybe seduced into thinking that this is going to be easy, then we find out that there is a little coding involved. Most of us want to run screaming from the room.

I have started by using your tutorials. But then in the next one, there is ,ore, and it doesn't say, "keep the stuff from the first tutorial and add this" so there is a lot of trial and error involved. Don't get me wrong, it is a way to learn, but darn frsutrating. Assume you are working with a bunch of monkeys. I was going to save cavemen, but you know how touchy they are.

Thanks. I'll jump back in when I grab the other web sites that I wrote about earlier. Really cool and I haven't the faintest idea how they did some of the stuff.

DId you get my PM today?Yep, got it. I needed a few free minutes in a row so I could actually do something. I hate to start something when I know I can't finish it.

So, here's what I've come up with know. Let me know your feelings.

The three main images when you click 'portfolio' will lead you to three galleries. Each gallery will be the portfolio of the link (do you have the 2 other images for me somewhere already?) I think that if you would lead them to a category with more galleries, it will get too confusing too quickly, plus you would need an extra level of navigation.

Besides that, I made a 'client' area. Click on 'client' (logged out so you see what your customers are seeing) Each gallery can have it's own hint/password.

I've set up the links in such a way that you can later add your custom domain, and the links will still work.

For the galleries, I thought of setting them to 'filmstrip', and writing up some JavaScript to flip the strip with the main image. :ear

Really cool and I haven't the faintest idea how they did some of the stuff.In the beginning, it will be a bit of trial and error, till you really understand how to use CSS/xHTML. But I found, that it's actually really easy to learn, if you understand the basics and know the difference between a class and an id.

It's silly, but it works; See CSS as decorating a car. See all objects on a page as being a car.

If you are using a . you are adressing a class. If you are using a # you are using an id. The class is the car, the id is the license plate. There is only one car with that specific license plate, but there can be many of the same cars of that class.

This sets all objects with the class "boxBottom" to have a red background (gives all the cars of the boxBottom a red color):
.boxBottom {
background-color: #ff0000;
}

This sets the object with an id "header" to have a red background (only the car with the license plate 'header' will get painted red)
#header {
background-color: #ff0000;
}

If you understand that, try playing around with the webdev (http://dgrin.smugmug.com/gallery/1354921). Go to one of my galleries (or someone else's with custom css), and take out or change a bit of the code using the "edit css" function. You can see instantly what it does. Best way to learn is to try.

Let us know if you have any questions.

I agree with everything. I have not seen the filmstrip look but am anxious to see what it looks like. i will finish up the other two pictures tonight. I am thinking of just going to two pictures with two links instead of three. The two being "Life & Love" and "Little Ones" since those cover 95% of the pictures I take.

If we go to 2 pictures (sorry...if it is too much work I understand) what size do you want them. I can get you both of them tonight.

Also, I do not need a Guest book.

Yep, got it. I needed a few free minutes in a row so I could actually do something. I hate to start something when I know I can't finish it.

:ear

2 or 3 doesn't make a big difference in this case, don't worry! Make them the same ratio, please. 2 wide by 3 high :thumb

Guestbook = :gone

Looks great. I am working on the other picture and you will have it by morning...for you.I've received your photos.

One had a bit of a border, and the wrong wratio, so I cut that off. I still have the original available as well, in case you wanted to create a border for the other one as well.

Have a look at the little ones album. What do you think of that layout, but the other way around? The main image above the strip? The strip will start to move when more photos get added.

The page you linked to me in PM, is similar in setup as the 'smugmug' style setup. That page was actually a separate file, instead of a page with files, so we can't use that exactly.

Looks good. Seems I have used different size fonts. Can you get the fonts the same size or do I need to redo the pictures?

I was thinking of having the thumbs below the main picture in the galleries.

Since my galley is limited, can we change it from Gallery to samples on the nav bar. We would then just link straight to the "Samples" gallery instead of having the two categories.

Certainly would like the thumbnails below the main picture in the "Samples" gallery. Is it possible to delete all of the information that is below the nav bar (shopping cart, next page, etc) on the current children gallery? So the "Samples" page would look just like the homepage except with thumbnails at the bottom. I do not want anyone to be able to purchase pictures in the samples gallery. Also the comments button can be removed...no need for that. :wink

Thanks a million...it is looking great!!! :bow :ivar :thumb

The pages should be:

Home
Clients
Samples
About
Contact

Thanks again!

So I guess I can start by removing all of my current photos and layout and start with a white background.

i really like what you are doing with your website, darrell. this is what i am shooting for, too. (but who has time to shoot?)

Karie...I can not take any of the credit. I just came up with the design and Ivar has been making it happen. There are a lot of great helpers on this site and I am certain you will get your problems solved!

Are we going to change that just to a single sample page now instead of two categories? That make more sense until I get enough quality shots for multiple galleries.

That make more sense until I get enough quality shots for multiple galleries.Do you mean the page with the two photos? I like it like this tbh, but if you want to wait till you have some more samples, that is no problem. I can just leave it there, but change the link. When you have enough photos, it's like flipping a switch to put it back.

I've made a lot of little changes to your site.
Have a look at it, mainly logged out. It looks a lot different as opposed to logged in.

You will need to come up with the text you want on the about and contact pages.

Also, I've linked to a random gallery for the samples right now, not sure if these are the photos you want to use as samples ?

Looking good. There is no page linked to the Samples page on the nav bar.Thanks.

The page I linked to is empty at this point, so you need to add a few photos to it. It's the samples gallery in your 'other' category :thumb

I've reversed your filmstrip pages as well.

I threw up a few pictures in the gallery just to fill it up. It seems to me the right arrow should make the strip advance to the left more quickly. It just seems backwards to me.

Can you make all the thumbs square regardless of picture size and layout? When it is clicked it could show the proper size but just have them all square in the filmstrip.

Did you get my last email? Ready to scream yet??? :wink

Thanks.

Ivar...

Can you make the contact page have input boxes as follows:

Name
Email Address
Subject
Message

Then there will be a submit button at the bottom to send the message. Is that possible?
