View Full Version : Assignment #21: Into the Light

Nikolai
Jan-11-2007, 11:09 PM
Enough low angles (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=50822)! This time we're going to have much more enlightening subject, as each valid shot should lead the viewer into the light!

While some non-trivial interpretations of the subject may be considered, the primary goal is to include a powerful light source into your frame. The source in question may be partially blocked, but it must present enough of itself to represent a valid entry.

The list of possible light sources includes, but is not limited to: sun, moon, street light, desk lamp, flashlight, car headlights, etc. Anything that actively emits light and is much brighter than the surroundings.

As always: fresh pictures, moderate post-processing.
For the rest of the basic rules and index please check out this sticky (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=41800).

Let's get enlightened! :-) :wink

I wonder if this photo qualifies...
This assignment is too similar to Specular Light.
I must be missing something here. :D

Was on my way home tonight when I noticed a fire at the airport, so I turned around to see what was going on. A small aircraft was upside down and burning. Didnt get alot of information except that everyone lived thankfully. I wasnt real happy with my execution as I had better shots but they were blurry or over exposed, heres a few that werent bad.

If this picture is fresh, it does:- )
If not, it don't:-)

Yes, this assignment is similar, yet different. We're looking for the light source being the main subject of the picture, not just an itty-bitty part of it. Check the Douglas entry, or this one (http://nik.smugmug.com/photos/107998886-L.jpg) (old) of mine.

Great entries, very cool photojournalism! :thumb
I'd suggest to contact a local newspaper and offer them a copy (don't forget to charge:-)

One thing (amongst many others:-) SoCal is good for: clear skies 24x7 most time of the year.
Not many chances for dramatic sunsets or crepuscular rays, but at least comet shots can be taken at will:-) :rofl

I wish it was MY hangar! Imagine the studio one can build in that thing. :wink

You're right. Fewer light sources do make for a more dramatic image.

I shot four frames of this one, this being the second, and used a different WB each time. I set this one for incandescent and liked how the two types of light played off each other.

I also took a forklift out back, where it was the only light source.

I did a lot more - it was a slow night - but I won't bore you any further on this assignment. :D

Hi Nicolai again,
Sorry for the delay. I couldn't upload my photos because of a poor connection .
Here are some I took for this assignment. Are they any better?

Yes, much! Nice entries, thank you! :thumb

While it's a very lovely shot, it does miss an important element: light source must be an important part of the frame...:dunno

I had cropped some of the sun out of the frame and have now recropped to include it again. I used levels but tried to avoid any PP that would negate the highlights. Does this help? If not, I'll keep this one on the back burner until I get something else that I like. Thanks.

BTW, this was one of those shots where the clouds suddenly shifted and I got more (strong) sun than expected.

I shot some other photos "into the light" earlier this evening, but nothing that I liked well enough to enter.
