Can .doc or .pdf files be added to galleries?

I want to include notes on photo shoots or other information relevant to a gallery. What is best way to closely associate the text file with the corresponding gallery? The main formats are:

.doc
.pdf
.xls

Any suggestions? Can a link be used with the MS files? Can a pdf be displayed directly as a thumbnail?

You would have to host those elsewhere and link to them.

You could link to a html only gallery and put your notes there. Either put the
link in the photo caption or gallery description.
