by leaps and bounds, could do a bit more post-processing/sharpening to get the color "pop" that is possible. Good luck with your contest!

The red cherries in ice is by far the most unique. The brown tones in the second one make it kind of drab. I think "color" for garden magazines.
I think the icy fruit in the first shot would be my second choice. I think roses are done too often to be able to get one that is exciting. So, I'd stay away from roses unless it's really unique.
Good luck on your entry. If you have more, please post. Love to see 'em.

I agree, the cherries is the most arresting. I also like the brown round thing (not sure what it is!)

It's what we call here a Puff Ball Mushroom.
That is a dries out one...when ya mash em a brown cloud of dust comes out.
Before they are dry out I'm told they are edible. :wxwax

I've had to think about this for a bit. I suggest the red berries and
the round brown thing. Both are unusual and will (hopefully) allow
the judges to remember them.

Okay, so we all agree about the rose hips after a freezing rain pic.
The puffballs (funny brown things) can be enhanced a bit by adding a border or digital frame. However I have to figure out if there is enough of an image left - it is a pretty big crop - to meet the minimum 3 x 5 size requirement for the contest.
Here are a few other possibilities:
The standard bee on chive flower - looks great printed and really impressed my mom in law - but I think it is like rose pics - everyones got one

different fungus:

I like the first one of the brown branches with the round things at the end, and of course the iced over rose hips, but I also think the bee on the chive flower is very interesting. I like the highlights in the wings, the bee shape is almost triangular pointing to the flower, and left and right are those marvelous out of focus lavendar chives which help to subtly frame the main chive.
While roses can be great, the one you have isn't absolutely drop dead stunning (which is what you need to have a chance in the rose area), so I agree with everyone else.
While the puffballs are unusual, perhaps some rim lighting or a different background (yeah I know, you couldn't import one!) make the image overall look kind of bland. I don't know how much digital art you'd want to do to them, or if it's allowed.
Anyway, I hope you win!

FWIW, the first is Cotone aster (I have forever called it cotton easter:scratch ) with a light frost on them.
I appreciate these comments alot! I never (well, almost never) dissect my own stuff like that - but I should!
Thanks, Dee - we'll see - first for everything!
