black and white capture of fields

Here is a shot I made last summer. I've used channel mixer to convert in B&W with some curves and hue & saturation adjustments layers. Do you have any treatment to suggest or receipt to share?

I think the trees are too dark. Not much detail there. And the road is too "hot". The sky is good. The dark tones for the grass also need to be "opened up" a bit to get a better distribution of tones.

I played around a little bit with the trees and some selective sharpening. Without the original color image I tried my best. :dunno

There are a couple of ways to open up shadow areas, either thru levels using the middle slider, or curves, or selective color and only using the last three colors white/neutrals/blacks and using the bottom slider (black) to increase or decrease the effect. You'll have to "paint" back what you want to keep in the layer below. If it's not to painfully complex you can do a selection and create a layer and mask and do it that way too. Lots of different ways just pick one. :D

Thanks guys for the suggestions. Here is a render I made from a picture of the same shoot based on your comments. I ajusted the luminosity and leaved the original hue & saturation of the colors. I like the color best.

Instead of changing the whole image at once, mask off the areas that are either too dark or too hot and use adjustment layers to correct them.

Were these shot with film?!

Hi Mark,

I also prefer the color too. I made thoses pictures with a 350D + sigma 17-125. I had no way to backup my memory cards so I was force to shoot in jpeg to save room. Once your used to shoot RAW, it's a pain to come back to jpegs...
