View Full Version : Assignment #18: Guesswork
Nikolai
Dec-09-2006, 11:53 AM
Well, we all had a window (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=48498) of opportunity, now it's time to make others guess.
Make an otherwise very familiar and totally recognizable subject look totally strange. Usually this can be achieved by closing up or/and choosing drastic angles, but don't let me limit your imagination.
The submission is considered valid if it takes longer than a few seconds for an average person to figure out what on earth you've presented. However, the subject should be also common enough for anyone to recognize it had it been photographed from a conventional angle/distance - or once the angle and/or distance are/is properly guessed.
As always: fresh pictures only, no massive PS compositing, etc.
Also, please do not use any PS tricks to distort or recolor the subject. The idea is to take an unusual picture of a common subject, not to test you PS skills.
For the rest of the basic rules and index please check out this sticky (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=41800).
May the guesswork begin! :thumb
PS. Sorry for the late announcement, getting very busy at work...

Nikolai.
I hope you are getting better.
:D
If you ask: Is this the roof top of some building, that is positive.
And if I tell you: It's part of a boat. Would you believe me ?
:thumb
I think the goal is achieved, so far, isn't it ?

Since I never had any reason not to trust you, why should I start this time? :D
And yes, it definitely made me guess, so with this shot mission is definitely accomplished:-):thumb

Not bad, Aaron. You got the last two right.
(Maybe edit your post so my photos aren't shown twice? I don't mind but it does take up alot of space.)

03. Stove top burner
04. Bike sprocket and cranks
05. Pentax??? I have no idea.
06. Map of USA
07. Map of Central America

Fabulous :) That pleases me greatly that I stumped you on the majority.
A pendulum in what is the real question... do you know? If not I'll post the full pic...
And yeah good going on the 2nd, I really liked the angle of the shot, hehe:

#4 is the pendalum for a grandfather clock. Without more context, it could be for a grandmother clock or possibly an even smaller clock but I prefer the size and style of a grandfather clock so that's my guess. :D
#1 looks like a bunch of handles but I can't make out what's on them due to the coloring (looks like the over-blue effect I've gotten on accident in the past when I had a really bad white balance set).

Number one are electrical cables all around a cylinder for transportation.
They are dirty because they are outside and have been dragged in the sand.
The shadow is from the photographer.
But they have a strange colours though ...:scratch

They are Ramune bottles, very unique in that you have to tip them towards the two grooves to drink, otherwise that marble looking piece inside will block the opening and the soda will not come out. :)

Your first guess may very well be right - I don't know what it was my friend was drinking. :D

Some speaker grill in a classic auto?
It is portable, but not in that particular manner. Also, think a little closer to the source of the sound, but not the actual recording (past or present tense) of it. It is a speaker, in a manner, but it requires a sort of amplifier. "Old" and "classic" still apply.
I may end up with 78 guesses to this one! :D

Grammophone needle holder? :scratch
Close enough! :clap It's the resonator for an RCA Victrola.
What happens is, the needle is mounted to the resonator, which sends the sound through the tone arm to the sound box. Believe it or don't, there are only two ways to control volume: changing the needle from hard to soft or shoving a sock in the sound box. (Ever wondered where the phrase, "Shove a sock in it" to silence a loud talker came from?) Until you've experienced one, you really don't know how loud these things are.
I found it in an antique store in Barstow about a week ago. Here's a picture of it.

I think the fact that the image is slightly tilted is throwing us off a bit. The second shot did not show up, so I don't know if it's a bad link or my browser.
Because you said you must be behind it to see, tells me it could be red mini-blinds behind a tinted window.
