View Full Version : Hows the rain goin' fish ?
:roll
Been wanting to try & shoot this waterfall for ages now & i assumed it would be easy. Always good to have confidence 'eh ?
The day started out dreadfull ...as you can see fish we are in the same boat with the bad weather.
On the way to the falls
http://humoungus.smugmug.com/photos/13559606-L.jpg
Walked through some beautiful rainforest to get to the top of the falls..
http://humoungus.smugmug.com/photos/13559598-M.jpg
The falls must have been running a while...that rock is basalt which those that are into rocks will know..isnt easy to wear with water.

Bloody queenslanders !
Show 'em a bit of water without croc's..sharks..box jellys...blue ringed octopus..cone shells..stingrays..sea snakes ...irukandji...stone fish & they wont leave it alone for some odd reason.

Shot from inside the cave..at night the roof of the cave lights up with what people call 'Glow worms' which to a naturalist like you & me is quite silly...they are indeed the larvae of the 'Fungus Gnat. The Gnat is a bit like a mosquito & the light people see is from 2 organs found on the end of the larvae. Once a small insect is attracted to the light it becomes stuck on the dangly sticky bit & is hauled up & eaten.

I have no idea how deep it is under the fall.

Well thats it ..it is hard to photograph bright & dark in the same shot...that i know. Its what sorts the amature from the pro.
Much easier to keep to the small forest floor water falls that are almost in full shadow.

Stopped for a dogs eye on the way home. Always plenty of bikers up this way....
well fish ..the weather is just so crappy on a bike.

Guss,
Can I intervene in a 'private' conversation you and Fish are having?
Great shots!

WOW - I teach you how to drop shadow and the next thing I know you are posting stuff like this!!! Great show 'gus.
These are a great series of shots and yes handling dark and light is very challenging and you did good.
Did you use FredMirandas plug in for handling contrast for this series? I may have to revisit FM after all.
Very Good Show.:thumb
Tks PF...I just recon a drop shadow presents a photo better. Presentation is 9/10ths.
Man does it take longer to do your shots when you get home though :bash so please keep me in mind when you do the series "how humungus can press a button & put his shots into drop frame"
No programs used in these...just lucky with the light. FM layering prog is only good for a static shot, get water & people involved & its just not going to work.
I did take some good advise from you blokes last time Re: the higher f stop. made quite a difference to my photos that i noticed.
Thanks again for looking mate.

I love the ones with the people in the falls-pond-thing. The sixth picture I don't like. The waterfall is great, the framing on the people getting out is great, but I feel like there is no subject for my eye to find quickly. Or a better way of putting it is that it forces me to split my attention between two subjects. I think that the framing would have made for an awesome two shots taken separately. I don't know if others agree with me, but I just feel like this is more of a snapshot rather than some of the artistic caliber of the other shots.

Snapshot alright...inside a cave lookig at 2 totally different settings in different light. Its more a perspective view of the scene for anyone whom hasnt been there. I rarely think about framing...
tks

yes, you should learn to use raw. you'd be able to expose these types of scenes even better, and avoid the blown out waterfalls - shooting in raw would allow you to develop multiple exposures from the same shot, and blend them in post...
it's the next step for you, 'gus, and one which you should be taking imo....
the pics are beautiful, but they can be even better, that's all i'm sayin' :deal

funny, funny man. :hang
We're starting to flood here. It's been raining pretty hard for the last few hours and the ground is saturated. Time to go dig some ditches.
Quick shot out the front yard for your amusement...

True...at least I can ride in the rain. I intensely dislike riding in snow and ice.

What's the problem. Fish? Looks like nice Indiana weather like we've been having for the last 4 days.

true. and there's a reason i don't live in Indiana.
actually, there are quite a few reasons, but this is just one that comes to mind. :rofl

I think it will take the fun out of it for me andy. I really..really struggle with computers & to have something in layers that takes up that much room is just gonna clog up my head.
Maybe within the year i will walk in here with my new canon DSLR (the next model on from fish of course) & 400 mm lens....then i will have to to shoot raw.
How'd i do ?

Hiya Gus!
I always like the tales you weave of the place you live. I of course am
jealous when I see you were out riding today. I took the truck today and boy
does it like to drink :cry I saw few riders and I felt their pain as it was raining
hard in the North Bay.
Cheers,
ian
