View Full Version : Assignment #17: Windows

Wow, and I thought specular highlights (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=48050) would be a tough one. But judging by the number of entries it was a walk in the park:-)
Anyway, let's do something different this week: let's shoot windows!
I don't mean all-familiar OS :wink .
I mean the actual windows: in the buildings, barns, churches, cars, vessels - you name it.
From the outside or inside - whatever you think is a good shot.
Try to find an interesting one, but most of all, make your window (or windows) the primary subject of your shot.
As always: fresh pictures only, moderate PS is OK.
For the rest of the basic rules and index please check out this sticky (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=41800).
Who said photographers don't do windows? :wink :rofl

More will come...
It gave me some work.
I had to shoot for the landscape while getting the inside.
For great depth of field I used the CPF and the ND to use f/22 with 1/15 as I can remember.
The focus was to the window itself.
I used a reflector which was on the ground (!).
RAW of course, and this is the melting of 2 pics: one for the inside and another to the outside, layer mask, erase etc

Thank you Nik.
I suspected I was not telling the hole truth. I used flash slow sync.
Model: Canon EOS 20D Size: 3661x2480 Bytes: 2516624 Aperture: f/20.0 ISO: 200 Focal Length: 24mm Exposure Time: 0.0769s (1/13) Flash: Flash fired, compulsory flash mode, red-eye reduction mode Exposure Program: Manual Exposure Bias: 0 ExposureMode: 1 White Balance: manual ColorSpace: sRGB
I shot 3 pictures with exposure bracketing and used one of them.
It was manual because I needed to lock the light measured outside.

I like your pictures. Best the 2.ed one.
The 1.st one - you must confess - is not very good. I say: it is not for your standards !
You do - yes Sir you do - photograph far better than this.
You have an excuse this time. :D
Be Healthy !!!
BTW: Thank you for telling me what to be under the weather is ! You did well because I didn't know.

Only got around to editing it today... can't do anything about the bendy bricks. ;>þ

I agree, it's a bit OOF. Shooting agains the large bright b/g can fool many cameras AF systems. You need to use spot metering or manual, and basically be prepared for this.

I think he means that there is a subject (the building across the way) framed through another subject (the window frame) instead of the photo concentrating just on the window itself.

Technically, it's avalid entry, but since we are all trying to become better photogs, a few lines of C&C:
1) Lighting sucks. Buildiong is too dark, sky is too bright.
2) Angle is lame. It should be either bolder, or "dead on", at least from left-right perspective.
3) Flag is a nice touch!
I presume it was taking in the evening, try an early morning shoht with windows reflecting the sky/sun, and try to frame the sky out, leaving only the building face. You may wanna try to get farther back and use longer focal length.

tanks for the C&C, i'm still 'green' in photography :rolleyes, but this forum is a great place to learn the technics and tips, and the assignments is a great way to pratice.

Aloha,

Regarding the image:
If one looks carefully one can see through the house to a window beyond. In the color image that was quite prononced but got kinda lost in the transision to Black & white.
