...is this black oak on a hilltop just out of town that makes a good foreground for a sunset:

This tree is a wonderful, wonderful old fellow!
As it is shown now the first shot is strongest imo.
In the second shot I would want to see more visual relationship between the trees, ie the two trees 'talking to one another'.
Go out for the next sunset, experiment with distance, angles of view, ..., ..., have fun, good luck.

I like the 2nd shot better. I like the gradient in the sky for bg, and something else about it works better for me, not sure exactly what though...

nice job. while i think both are really good, i prefer the 2nd one. this looks like a nice area for a panoramic shot.

I like both, but prefer the 2nd - it gives a better context of the surroundings.

I like the sky in the second one, but for composition of the tree I like the first. Nice pictures! :):
