Fishwife made an interesting comment the other day, as she watched me manipulate a photo. She said "I don't believe any photographs anymore. Anything can be changed."
Ya know...she's right. Used to be that photos had a relatively high degree of credibility, but no more.

Relatively is the perfect term. Photo manipulation is as old as photography itself. It is only the effortlessness that the computer brought into the game, and the public availability, that are making people realize what has been a truth for ages.
I know an old-style retoucher, a very old man. Trust me on this - his stuff is PERFECT. He can swap people around, seamlessly eliminate a person from a photo, the works. He uses watercolors, airbrush, and pencil. The thing that really got me was that he does most of his manipulation on the negative. :bow
here's a couple quick links just to get the thread rolling:

No worries, same thing happened last time we discussed this. Shay weighed in with a very authoritative defense of photo manipulation, and that was that. :D

As did I.
As far as the news goes i am a bit of a hermit and had no idea that this stuff was going on.
Pretty far out.
If they all treat it like its ok, how long before a history changing event is totaly faked.
Wag The Dog may not be as far out as it seemed.

"In recent days, a picture showing Mr. Kerry at a podium with Ms.
Fonda has circulated on the Internet. But the picture is a hoax,
according to the photo agency that owns the original, Corbis. In the
original photo, Mr. Kerry is alone at the podium."
In the election where Dukakis got trounced the dirty tricks included a photo of Boston Harbor with a warning sign that did not exist.
