I have music that I want to listen to on my computer, the music from the site clashes and sounds horrible. It also prolongs loading time. Smugmug in general is slow to load with the number of scripts and photos that have to be loaded, without adding to it.

2. If you put it in your header then it would be on every page.

3. The photo on your site is stuck in the middle of the page and the menu moves over the top of it depending on the size of the window. IE7 and FF.

I don't know why so many people complain about websites having music. So long as muting/stopping it is quick and easy I think it's great. I say quit whining.

By the way, ever heard of MySpace? A few zillion profiles, 99% with music...doesn't seem to be driving people away. I'm no expert but something tells me websites of the future are going to have a lot going on, music included. Not just boring, static pages. So get used to it, folks.

That said, with the site Andy linked the music started over every time I clicked a different photo from that gallery, thus refreshing the page I guess. Now THAT didn't make NO sense.

I assume you are saying to go to this site to hear the music. I don't hear anything. I'm getting closer to joining on the prosite with Smugmug but just working out some details before hand. I do want music on a bridal page I plan on creating. While I have your attention here I do like your moonriver site and was wondering what size your main photo is in pixels?

I agree that music gets really old with photos but brides like it. thanks. Sherrlyn

So, you can of course hide it, if you give it a DIV, say, <div id="mysongspot">insertthecodeshere</div> and then in CSS you can do #mysongspot {visibility: hidden;}

Enjoy![/quote]

Just to update this...For the Sonific Songspots...You can go into the code, and change the pixel dimensions from 250 x 91 to 0 x 0, and it will get rid of the player. I did it on my homepage.

I don't know why so many people complain about websites having music. So long as muting/stopping it is quick and easy I think it's great. I say quit whining.

For me, at least, there are several problems with web pages and music.

Like a lot of people, I have good full-range speakers hooked up, and am sometimes surfing in peace. When a page with music comes on, it tends to blast in out of nowhere, which is a jarring experience if the room was quiet. If someone is in a cubicle environment, a website with music nearly qualifies as Not Safe For Work.

Aesthetically, it had better be good music, and the longer the better, because it's really bad when a music clip is both short and annoying because then it loops like an ice cream truck, and that really starts to grate.

I surf using tabs. I'll read the front tab while the other tabs load. Occasionally I'll start to hear music in the background which has nothing whatsoever to do with the web page I'm reading, because it is actually playing in one of the tabs I opened in the background. There is then a few seconds of chaos as I flip through the tabs to determine which of those dang pages has the sound on it.

Now, I don't hate music. I LOVE music. And that leads to yet another problem. I often surf with music. I'm groovin' along to my tunes, everything's great, then I go to a web page and suddenly there is the infernal racket of some web page with a bad music loop that's playing through the same speakers at equal volume to my own music, causing a terrible sonic train wreck! If I opened it as a tab in the background, then you combine this problem with the previous paragraph and that web page achieves a whole new level of annoyance.

I'm not absolutely saying don't do this, I'm just saying be aware that there are quite a few reasons why music on a page reflects on a web page negatively to so many people. There is probably a good way to do it. Maybe fade it in, choose it carefully, test for how it sounds when it comes up out of nowhere, test its mental effect when it loops for 5 minutes straight while you browse, that sort of thing.

Audio is just as sophisticated an art form as photography, so pay the usual attention to composition, quality, context, etc. so that we can avoid creating the sonic equivalent of a MySpace background photo. :rolleyes :D

My mistake...gallery is: http://www.memoryhill.com/gallery/2694771/1/142717683

I've completed the new look of my homepage. I was striving for a three demensional look while trying to adhere somewhat to the sunshine theme.

On a last minute whim, I added music and was able to limit it to only the homepage by using Andy's suggestion with one exception. I placed the div in the bio box not the footer.

The jury is still out if the music stays or goes...I'm waiting to hear from my customers and friends.

Have fun,

The only two possible ways of doing this that I know of would be:
1. by using a popup that the visitor would have to leave open during his visit or
2. by using frames, but they don't work properly with smugmug pages at all.

The trouble with the first option on the other hand would be that most people nowadays run popup blockers that would catch such an act.

Long story short: I don't know of any good way of doing this on smugmug.

By the way (to all who hate music on sites) - the reason I am adding music is to keep consistant with the local competition. Not because I love hearing the song over & over again while viewing - or editing my site. :rolleyes It is a neat little feature to make it more recognizable (and hopefully in a good way). Most of my clients don't view websites continuously either. (like some of us do) But this is a break from the "normal" to have music on a website (not including myspace in the normal searched websites).

I hope that your clients don't have an aversion to sites with music.

If I go to a web site that includes sound, I usually leave it immediately. I may stay and browse if I can turn the sound off - but usually I just leave. Yes, it's entirely possible that I am missing some good content, but I really can't stand unsolicited sound.

There is an easily accessible OFF button. And I don't see that it would turn away any clients - if they want their pictures taken by me - I HIGHLY doubt that the music on my site will change their mind. Thank you for your opinion. It will only be on my homepage & I seriously doubt they will be there long. Like I said this is to keep up with local comp. And since my local comp. is doing well - I don't see that my music will cause anymore of an aversion as theirs has/hasn't. I don't let music scare me away from sites....I just either stop their song or turn off my speakers. I go to a site for a reason & plan to obtain all goals in which I visited the site to begin with. But - again...thanks for your opinion. To each his/her own....

I'll assist you in moving it.
Just move the player code from your bio that is enclosed like this:
<div id="mymusic">
[player code]
</div>
to your footer section in the smugmug customizations.

You already have some CSS code concerning the player. You just need to remove that:
.galleries #mymusic {display: none;}

See if that works and come back if there are any problems.

Especially if it is on EVERY gallery page that you have. I admit I do like a bit o music to stir the soul when I look at a photo or two. But I like the controls at hand and easy to kill.

this way is a start I guess, but only one song and on every page by default, is a no go for me.

I don't want music on my homepage, BUT...
For clients, it would be nice to have it on a particular gallery set to a slideshow of their pictures...
Is this possible??
Thanks in advance!

Would a smugmug gallery count as commercial use? Because I'm not "officially" in business but people are paying me to cover my costs and time...
?
I only ask because I don't want to get in trouble... :dunno

Hi everyone, good to hear you are discussing Sonific. Just wanted to add 2 things: we have just now added 125.000 tracks on Sonific, LOTS of great new tracks, from Sinatra to Muddy Waters to Ninja Tune stuff - see our news release here. (http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/070626/aqtu109.html?.v=10)
We also have a new songspotting blog here (http://www.songspotting.com), and my own Sonific Music blog here. (http://www.sonificblog.com)
So - a lot more choice now. and playlists are coming soon, too.
2nd -- if you use the songspot widget code it would be nice if you did NOT hide the player - after all, that is why our labels and artists are providing the music for free ;)
Thanks, and cheers Gerd Leonhard, CEO www.sonific.com

well, some like it, some hate it -it all depends on who comes to your site. Everyone expects music to play at myspace but no-one would appreciate it on linkedin.com Right? Check out Sonific's example page (http://sonific.com/home/examples)for some very cool, and very weird sites :rofl

you can see it here

So, you can of course hide it, if you give it a DIV, say, <div id="mysongspot">insertthecodeshere</div> and then in CSS you can do #mysongspot {visibility: hidden;}

Enjoy!

Andy,

I've just gotten the hang of adding Quicktime movies to my galleries. I've got a few photos from London which might, depending on point of view, benefit from a little music.

Can you only add a single music clip to a single gallery? Or can you add a clip one photo at a time (since only a couple of photos "deserve" it.).

Are there more specific CSS details posted elsewhere?

Thanks,

Zmom

PS - I thought the music was great in the demo gallery. To be used in moderation, of course!

I don't actually use it on my main site - that's just a demo gallery to show how it can be done :)
You can put music in the album description or in the photo caption, but not both.

You must put the music html in a div.

<div id="mymusic">
blah blah music code
</div>

then, in CSS:

#mymusic {display: none;}
.homepage #mymusic {display: block;}

Would appreciate if u could help me here.
What i did was put the songspot music codes into the footer section and changed the width and height to "0" so it hides.
Problem is right now whenever i click on any buttons on the nav bar, the music restarts. How to i get the music to play continously?

I really don't know :( Width and height to 0 is not the answer to hiding though.

Nor does Sonific want you to actually hide it.

Please be more clear, I'm not sure what you want done.

I hear music on your site.
Please fully describe what you want, so that the helpers can help, thanks :)

I can tell you, that having music on at the start is a huge turn off for many (me included). You might want to seriously think about how you use music.

You can, of course :)
But many people don't want the initial "surprise" of music. If it's there, and they choose to turn it on, that's cool.

Different strokes for different folks.

Hey, guys. My turn to be a pain in the rump....

With Sonific closing soon they apparently aren't taking new members, so that route is out. Which is a darn shame because I'd FINALLY found a song that was really working for me.

Anyway, found another song, uploaded to fileden, got the code and tried to put it on my homepage. And at that point I'm dead in the water. I've added what I BELIEVE was appropriate code to both footer & CSS areas......

The song file doesn't seem to work. I only want it to play on the homepage.... anyone have time to lend a hand?

Hi Penrod, post your code you use.

http://wiki.smugmug.com/display/SmugMug/How+To+Add+Music

I would like to try to add music to my site. I have read the instructions you posted above, but I am not sure I quite understand where the mp3 needs to reside. I sit uploaded to the smugmug site just like gallery photos are...and it resides there??

I would like for it to play on all pages, so that it doesn't start and stop each time you change pages or only on one specific page.

I am planning on using instrumental piano music. Does it run in a loop or do I have the option of having more than one song if someone lingers longer at the site?

Also I would like to have a "music off" button available for anyone to turn it off, though I don't want a media player visable on the page.

Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.Unless you use a table (outdated & bad) or pop up window (bad, but not as bad). You can't do it. Some web weenies will say a pop up is bad, but If done well and the user knows it's coming. It can be used for good.

The music resides on what is called a host. A host is a chunk of computer hard drive space that has permanent access to the web. So when the web page go to find the MP3 (or whatever) it finds out where the host is (this part is embedded in the code) and grabs it. This is the same thing a SmugMug image being posted on the dgrin gallery here. SmugMug hosts the image, but you use it in another location.

All settings such as loop, volume etc are embedded in the JavaScript as variables. Most of the time you can go in and just click buttons on the hosting site to make adjustments like there. But you can also go into the code and change the variables if you can figure it out.

Make sense?

Thanks for the reply. Yes and no. So then must I have a "visible" media player on the site in order to have any music?

I have seen some nice sites (non-smug) that had this invisible music feature, so I guess they were residing on a server or with a different format than you can do on smug?

So what then would be my options to add music?

Thanks.

Thanks.It's only invisible since it isn't wrapped inside an html tag.

I don't mind music on sites in moderation, but MANY in here don't like it. But to force someone to listen to music by not providing the ability to turn the music down or off is just un-courteous to the viewer IMO.

There are tons of tuts in here on how to get music on your sm site. Try them out and ask specific questions.

To start you out. Try going to a music hosting site such as imeem.com or the equivalent. This is where you will find the songs and grab the code to put in your SM site.

HINT:
Unless there's a specific button to make SmugMug code. Most sites think that you are going to embed this into an HTML page. SM sites are HTML, but not in the standard sense. So your going to need to wrap the code you copy in html tags (http://www.w3schools.com/html/html_intro.asp).
*I provided an example, but couldn't make it work properly in these forums.

I'm much more versed in standard xhtml/css than actual SM site customization though. So there are are others that can answer more specific questions w/o having to look it up or research like I would have to.

atom k
Jun-29-2008, 04:41 PM
Hey, here's an idea, it's probably beyond the ability of SmugMug - I don't know if I've seen it anywhere for that matter. What if you could have music play the first time someone views your homepage but then, using cookies or something, the audio wouldn't play automatically if they returned to the homepage minutes later (the viewer could still voluntarily hit "play" if they wanted to) - far less irritating and obtrusive than audio replaying every time the page is loaded.

If that were possible, you could even set it to play only once a day or once an hour or whatever increment you chose.

Just throwin it out there...

Ok, so I have a question...

I placed DIV tags and everything in my footer - I verified it works on the home page and everything - however, I only want it to play in a gallery...

How can I do this?

In my CSS I have:

.gallery_mygallery #my_music {dispaly: block;}

Footer, I have:

<div id ="my_music">
<div align="center">
<embed src="http://www.mysite.com/song.m4a" width="70" height="18" autostart="true" loop="true">
</div>

I would like to have this only autostart in my one gallery, not on the homepage or the rest of the site...

Who can help me? :clap
