Not sure if this helps, Max, but you can test code using the Firefox web developer plug-in. A lot of folks here also have hidden test galleries to try new stuff before making it live. I have an entire gallery category that is "hidden" from the public but is full of tests and samples.
For example, using that method, here's a gallery Mike Lane helped me figure out-- one that uses side scrolling! It's rough and not ready to go live, but I was able to test the code out on a test gallery on Mike's site using the web developer plug-in before I even tried it on my site.

But like I say, I'm not sure if that's what you're after.

Thanks Pete, that's a good tip.:thumb
While this covers some of the ground, the test site will allow you to develop your entire site or redevelop it without any consquence to your production site - a playground if you will. If you travel - this really keeps things clean and on the net - so it matters not to whose PC your running. I also think this strengthens SmugMug's business model - offering this type service goes way beyond any competitor and that will attract those that try to do it all on their own. Basicly this could be a win win and the same for the SuperMega Pro Account I suggested.

Why not sign up for a new account as a test site ?
As long as you keep a local copy of the code, you should be fine. And the added deadline of 14 days will help motivate to get it done ! :rofl
I did my sites as a necessaity of getting them how I want them, now I'm too busy photographing to play with them ...
So, a dedicated test site would be a waste for me. I might rejig the site in a years time and I'll just sign up for a new account to play with it.

I'm all for a test site.
Sometimes the tests you might want to run is on the main page (like maybe the navigation or something like that), so a test gallery might not cut it as one mentioned.

I only ask Andy, as I was about to run a test with a trial account, but was unable to do so because in the control panel I don't have the 'customize' option.
Needed to make changes to my navbar (to add a second tier) but wasn't about to do that on a working site.

You just need to upgrade your trial account to power or pro. You can do that in control panel :deal
