WTF Happened?

I was helping a friend shoot a cheerleading competition last weekend, and something horrible went wrong. For the life of me I can not figure out why there is SOOOOO much noise in these photos. I'm pretty new to digital SLRs so I'm not to familiar with Canon performance, have you shot with this camera at ISO 1600 before? No problem with noise then? :scratch

The higher the ISO the more noise. I have a Nikon and it is especially true for my camera. :cry

At 1600 ISO, you will get noise. But this does seem out of line..
I can't help you with why it happened.

But Noise Ninja will help improve the shoot after the fact.

Have you done any adjustments to these shots at all, including changing the exposure level of the RAW file?

I agree with Sid and David. It looks like these images were "pushed" during conversion. Unless you were in a Pro or major college level gym, F2.8 @ISO1600 will not expose well at 1/500. So I believe you started out a stop, or more under (under exposed). Which will really bring out the noise @ ISO1600.

Like Steve said, these look like jpg artifacts to me. Probably from being pushed due to underexposure.

I don't shoot at 1600 very much, but a quick scan of my hard drive turned up over several hundred images shot at ISO 1600 with 20Ds, 5Ds, and 1DMkll, and they all looked very much better than your first shot in the series.

Your shot was not made up of individual dots, but angular lines, like miniature boomarangs, and that makes me think of jpg artifacts.

How exactly were your iamges processed? IN camera jpgs, or RAW files? What were the parameters used??
