View Full Version : CNAME Help - can't use my domain email accounts!

I know I'm naive when it comes to this stuff but I have only just realised that if I CNAME my domain to smugmug (which I currently do and want to do rather than forward) I can't then use my domain email accounts (which I also want to do rather than my own 'home' IPS account) because the name server is wrong!

Catch 22!

Anyone experienced the same can offer any help other than me registering a 'similar' domain name just to use the emails?

Help?

Hi,
Who is your domain host? You shouldn't have to change any nameservers, or mx records, or mail records, to work with SmugMug. Only CNAME.

Andy

I am with 1and1.co.uk

This is their customer support reply to my question:

If you setup a CNAME for your domain name e-scapephotography.co.uk. This
means the DNS settings you specify for the domain name will no longer
work.

However, if you wish to use our mailservers of your domain name with us
an host your website elsewhere you can change the A record of your
domain name and keep the mailservers with us.
http://faq.oneandone.co.uk/domains/dns_settings/8.html
For step no.4 please specify other IP address and under mail exchanger
1&1 mail server.

If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact us.

Wow. The ones I'm familiar with (joker, godaddy, register, etc) don't have that restriction. I'm sorry, I don't have an answer for you.

Looks like I will have to use an A record and hope you guys don't change your IP frequently!

Perhaps I can transfer my domain to somewhere that allows both...

Thanks anyway.

YES! I recommend a transfer, look at joker or godaddy. They are really easy to work with, IMO.

I got the A record working for now and that will give me time to find a domain host that allows both to work properly :) Please don't change your IP just yet guys!

Al,

Are you sure emails aren't working ?

I just ran nslookup on your domain, and it looks very similar to what my domain has...and my email works fine.

Cheers,

David

FYI, DNS Central does .co.uk and we know SmugMug. Please feel free to contact me personally or look around the site if you want to know more. http://www.dnscentral.co.uk/

David,

It does work at the moment because I have smug on an A record to the IP address not CNAME.

Bill

Thanks for the tip, will take a look at your site :)
